  • Identifying surface defects that may affect or prevent corrosion
  • Determining where corrosion can occur and how it will spread
  • Identifying hidden flaws, such as cracks and metal fatigue, using a magnifying glass or other devices
  • Testing for defects in metal parts such as welds and joints that may weaken the part or cause fatigue damage
  • Interpreting results
  • Identifying the causes of problems with structures and the methods needed to fix them
  • Performing additional tests if initial results are not conclusive

These tests involve several variables requiring the technician to consider and analyze material thickness, temperature changes and other variables in their design reports. For example, a technician that is measuring the thickness of a material using ultrasonic thickness testing may analyze the materials to understand which equipment to use, how to operate the testing equipment and how to interpret the test results.
  • Technical skills: Adept at working with technical drawing and analysis technology.
  • Safety: Maintains a safe, secure and healthy environment by adhering to Company/Customer safety standards and practices and to legal regulations, alerting others regarding potential hazards or concern.

Safety skills allow them to identify potential safety concerns before they occur and follow proper procedures to ensure employee safety. For example, an NDT technician may know to wear radiation‑resistant equipment before using an X‑ray machine.
Performance and Productivity Metrics
