Job summary

Northwell Health is seeking a patient care assistant to support mental health patients under RN supervision. You will assist with ADLs, carry out therapeutic activities, and help maintain a safe unit environment.

The role involves helping with hygiene, meals, escorts to appointments, admissions/discharges, and responding to emergencies with CPR when directed. Prior college or equivalent experience is required.

Qualifications

• Two years of college required; pre-health/psychology courses preferred.
• Six years related experience acceptable in lieu of college.
• CPR certification or demonstrated CPR during orientation.
• Ability to lift, turn, position and restrain patients as needed.

Responsibilities

• Initiate and encourage therapeutic patient interactions and relationships.
• Orient patient to unit and hospital and explain treatment program.
• Assist with personal hygiene and housekeeping tasks for patients.
• Assist at meal times and supervise patients during meals.
• Escort patients to appointments and activities off unit.
• Support admissions, discharges, and transfers of patients.
• Assist RN with procedures, vital signs, and directed tasks.
• Respond to medical/psychiatric emergencies under RN direction; CPR when needed.
• Observe patients and ensure safety on and off unit.
• Co-lead group therapy and conduct patient education/activity groups.
• Document observations and maintain flow sheets; report to RN.
