Job description

Inpatient Advanced Practice Provider (APP) - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) - General Internal Medicine

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The Department of General Internal Medicine (GIM), Section of Consultative Medicine, provides comprehensive inpatient and consultative care for patients across the care continuum while supporting the management of chronic and acute medical conditions through a multidisciplinary approach. The Advanced Practice Provider plays an important role in delivering high-quality care and supporting the inpatient consult service.

The Advanced Practice Provider works closely with faculty physicians to manage complex medical needs, coordinate care, and support patients throughout hospitalization and treatment. The Advanced Practice Provider contributes to patient education, clinical collaboration, and continuity of care while helping ensure consistent seven-day coverage across the service.

The ideal candidate is an experienced Advanced Practice Provider with at least three years of APP experience and a strong foundation in Internal Medicine. Preferred candidates have Internal Medicine experience and/or Weight Management/Obesity Clinic experience and/or Certified Weight Management or Obesity Medication certification. Candidates should demonstrate strong clinical judgment, effective communication skills, job stability, and the ability to transition within one month.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Patient Management
  • Assess patients through comprehensive histories, physical examinations, and psychosocial assessments.
  • Manage chronic and acute medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, COPD, and common episodic illnesses.
  • Assess and manage suspected DVT, asymptomatic PE, and chemotherapy-related adverse events.
  • Provide care for acutely ill hospitalized surgical patients.
  • Communicate findings and treatment plans to physicians, patients, and families.
Documentation, Orders & Clinical Coordination
  • Complete histories, physical assessments, and progress notes within 24 hours.
  • Order diagnostic testing, medications, and treatments within delegated prescriptive authority.
  • Review laboratory, pathology, radiology, and other diagnostic reports.
  • Complete clinical documentation, including radiology, nuclear medicine, and prescription-related paperwork.
  • Place patients on clinical pathways and support care coordination activities.
Care Coordination & Consultation
  • Support General Internal Medicine services in collaboration with faculty physicians.
  • Coordinate care with supervising physicians, consultants, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Review diagnostic results and assist with patient disposition planning.
  • Facilitate communication across specialties and healthcare teams.
  • Respond to provider consultations and serve as a liaison for patients and families.
Education, Research & Professional Development
  • Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans and ongoing care.
  • Provide training and mentorship to nursing personnel, APP students, house officers, and medical students.
  • Participate in clinical research activities and patient eligibility assessments.
  • Attend monthly Consultative Medicine meetings and Division of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds.
Professional Practice & Service
  • Promote a service-oriented, patient-centered approach to care.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with patients, families, physicians, and healthcare team members.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and ethical practice standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
  • Required: Master's Degree Nursing. or
  • Required: Doctorate Nursing Practice.
  • Degree may be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.
  • Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
  • Master's Degree Accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013.
