Job description

The Pharmacy Department at the Dana‑Farber Cancer Institute emphasizes reliability, professionalism, cooperation, teamwork, communication, positivity, and inclusiveness. The Pharmacy Technician II, Infusion provides technical support to pharmacy operations under a licensed pharmacist’s supervision and staffs locations as required.

Responsibilities
  • Practice as a pharmacy technician in accordance with all federal, state, DFCI, and Joint Commission policies, regulations and standards.
  • Fill medication orders and advance preparations, ensuring timely delivery of medication orders and supplies.
  • Utilize multiple systems such as EHR, Inventory Management Systems, and other necessary software to complete and document duties, identifying issues and reporting as needed.
  • Maintain the pharmacy inventory: sorting, stocking, rotating stock, and checking expiration dates.
  • Perform and document quality control steps required for safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Clean sterile and non‑sterile areas of the pharmacy as assigned.
  • Train other employees as assigned.
  • Communicate and escalate issues or problems.
  • Cross‑cover other locations or areas (e.g., materials management, outpatient, infusion).
  • Perform sterile and non‑sterile compounding of predominantly hazardous drugs in compliance with USP, DFCI policies and procedures, and applicable research protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with medication requirements within research protocols.
  • Maintain and support Automated Dispensing Cabinets, including retrieving federally controlled substances from the return drawer once certified.
  • Stock emergency medication as appropriate by site.
  • Set up and log pharmacy batch compound products.
  • Provide ADS downtime support to Chestnut Hill, Satellite, and Pediatric sites.
  • Perform essential pharmacy inventory functions (e.g., ordering and receiving) as applicable to Chestnut Hill, Satellite, and Pediatric sites.

  • Accurately perform pharmaceutical calculations.

  • Develop proficiency in aseptic technique and sterile compounding.
  • Develop proficiency and mastery of non‑sterile compounding.
  • Troubleshoot issues independently and assist in resolution or escalation.

  • Participate in department meetings and functions to promote efficiency.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Minimum Job Qualifications

The position requires a high school diploma or current enrollment in an accredited entry‑level pharmacy or related degree program, 2 years of pharmacy technician experience (including at least 1 year of compounding), Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy Registration, and National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB) within 1 year of hire. New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy Registration is required for roles at Londonderry or Merrimack Valley satellite locations.

Salary range: $60,195.20 – $70,543.20
