Job description

Heritage Medical Associates (HMA) is Middle Tennessee’s largest independent multi-specialty physician group, proudly serving patients since 1991. We are committed to protecting and advancing physician-led, patient-centered care through financial strength, operational discipline, and shared accountability. RN II’s in the Infusion department provide specialized nursing care by coordinating infusion treatments — establishing IV access, administering and monitoring intravenous and injectable medications, and managing prior authorizations, specialty pharmacy referrals, and billing —while delivering comprehensive, compassionate, and customized patient care within Tennessee state scope of practice. All work is performed in alignment with HMA’s mission, values, and commitment to high ethical and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure patient safety at all times while maintaining multiple infusion chair schedules and treating patients in a timely, efficient manner.
  • Establish and maintain IV access for infusion patients; set up and administer medications through the IV, and monitor patients throughout the duration of the infusion, taking down the IV upon completion.
  • Provide patient teaching and instruction regarding medications; keep the physician informed of patient status and any issues that arise during the infusion.
  • Administer medications as ordered — including IV, IM, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections, and oxygen when directed by a physician; obtain vital signs and document all administrations accurately and timely in the patient’s chart.
  • Obtain (in advance) pre-certifications, prior authorizations, and referrals required by insurance; verify reimbursement eligibility for specialty medication programs, and coordinate with grant and free-drug programs to secure and pre-order medications for the following week.
  • Maintain adequate medication and supply stock; set up and stock the infusion room for daily use, keep the room and equipment clean between infusions, and adhere to infection-control and quality-control standards, including refrigerator temperature, eyewash, O2, AED, and autoclave checklists.
  • Collect, label, and document lab specimens as needed; ensure patient chart entries are accurate and timely, and forward charts as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Secondary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Record health history of patients, noting abnormal conditions for the physician; complete charts and charge tickets, and review and verify codes for physician charges.
  • Care for wounds and apply sterile dressings; prepare patients for procedures and obtain necessary consent forms; provide discharge instructions and reinforce physician instructions.
  • Collect, label, document, and track lab; contact patients regarding test results and referrals as required.
  • Travel as needed to support operational or business needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Leadership and Culture Expectations
  • Support clinical & patient excellence by creating a compassionate, responsive, and high-quality patient experience in every interaction.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by treating patients, visitors, providers, and coworkers with professionalism, courtesy, respect, and responsiveness while supporting a positive patient experience and HMA’s mission and values.
  • Demonstrate accountability through reliability, professionalism, timely follow-through, and accurate documentation and communication.
  • Work collaboratively with physicians, coworkers, and operational teams to support efficient clinic workflows and coordinated patient care.
  • Communicate openly, respectfully, and professionally with patients, providers, and team members.
  • Practice stewardship by using time, supplies, equipment, and organizational resources responsibly and efficiently.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts by adapting to workflow changes, completing training, and contributing ideas that improve patient care and clinic operations.
  • Attendance and Reliability: Regular, reliable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position, and employees are expected to comply with HMA’s Attendance Policy, including established procedures for reporting absences and tardiness. Attendance requirements will be administered in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, including legally protected leave and reasonable accommodations.
