Job summary

Summary

The Infusion Nurse (RN) is responsible for coordinating and administering infusion therapies across multiple practice locations. This role includes clinical assessment, patient education, medication administration, and comprehensive coordination of pre-infusion requirements such as authorizations, laboratory review, and patient assistance programs. The Infusion Nurse may also provide clinical support within the practice on non-infusion days.

This position requires strong clinical judgement, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently in a multi-site environment

This position is designated as an on-site, patient-facing role. In-office presence is an essential function due to the need for real-time collaboration with providers, direct interaction with patients and caregivers, and secure handling of health data in compliance with HIPAA.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
  • Current BLS certification and ACLS preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience (infusion or specialty practice experience preferred).
  • Experience with prior authorizations and payer requirements strongly preferred.
  • Strong IV skills and knowledge of infusion protocols and aseptic technique.
  • Proficient in EMR documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and travel between sites.

Essential Functions (%)

All essential functions listed below are expected to be performed on-site. ENA has determined that these duties cannot be effectively or securely executed in a remote environment without compromising patient care, data privacy, or operational standards.

Physical Demands

  • Lift or move up to 25 pounds. Employees are expected to use appropriate ergonomics and tools such as hand carts for heavier loads.

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. The noise level is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear.

Key Responsibilities

Infusion Services

  • Administer IV infusions and injectable therapies in accordance with provider orders and established protocols.
  • Perform pre-infusion assessments, including review of labs and patient eligibility.
  • Monitor patients during and after infusions for adverse reactions; initiate appropriate interventions as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and preparation of medications.

Care Coordination & Authorization

  • Obtain and follow up on prior authorizations for infusion medications.
  • Coordinate required laboratory testing prior to scheduling infusions.
  • Review lab results for completeness and notify provider of abnormalities.
  • Facilitate enrollment and follow-up for manufacturer patient assistance programs.
  • Communicate with payers, specialty pharmacies, and vendors to ensure medication availability.
  • Confirm all required approvals and documentation are completed prior to scheduling patients.

Scheduling & Communication

  • Schedule infusion appointments once all clinical and financial clearances are obtained.
  • Provide patient education regarding therapy, potential side effects, and follow-up care.
  • Serve as a liaison between providers, patients, pharmacies, and administrative staff.

Multi-Site Travel

  • Travel to assigned practice locations to administer infusion services.
  • Ensure appropriate supplies and medications are available at each site.
  • Maintain compliance with site-specific policies and procedures.

Clinic Support (Non-Infusion Days)

  • Provide nursing support in clinic as needed, including triage, injections, patient education, and assisting providers.
  • Support quality initiatives and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Assist with medication inventory and ordering as appropriate.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong communication and patient education abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and follow up on complex authorization processes.
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, ambulatory setting.
