Job summary

depthfirst is seeking an Infrastructure Software Engineer to build, scale, and secure the infrastructure that powers depthfirst. You’ll own cloud and Kubernetes environments, production sandboxes, orchestrations, and compute resource lifecycle management.

This role combines deep infrastructure expertise with hands-on software engineering to design and develop infrastructure services and APIs, improve reliability and security, and strengthen compute environments.

Qualifications

• Experience building and operating cloud infrastructure and production systems in infrastructure engineering, platform engineering, SRE, or a similar role.
• Strong hands-on knowledge of Kubernetes, including workload scheduling, networking, resource management, scaling, and troubleshooting.
• Familiarity with deployment architectures such as SaaS, BYOC, air-gapped, etc.
• Strong software engineering skills in Go, with designing, building, and maintaining production services.
• Experience developing distributed systems with concurrency, retries, partial failures, and lifecycle management.
• Solid understanding of Linux, containers, networking, and cloud security fundamentals.
• Experience with infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and production observability.
• Ability to reason about tradeoffs between reliability, security, performance, cost, and operational complexity.
• Ownership from design through deployment and ongoing operation.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work through ambiguous problems with other engineers.
• Based in or willing to relocate to San Francisco.

Responsibilities

• Own cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes clusters for production systems and engineering teams.
• Design and develop production sandbox management and orchestration services, APIs, and distributed coordination for allocation, isolation, health monitoring, failure recovery, and lifecycle management.
• Improve workload scheduling, autoscaling, and capacity management to support growing demand.
• Strengthen infrastructure security through workload isolation, access controls, network policies, and secure configuration.
• Improve performance and cost efficiency by reducing startup latency and addressing bottlenecks.
• Build observability and operational tooling to help engineers understand system behavior.
• Debug production issues across service code, Kubernetes, Linux, networking, and cloud infrastructure, then implement durable fixes.
• Improve infrastructure as code, deployment pipelines, and upgrade processes to ensure reliability.

About This Role

We’re looking for an Infrastructure Software Engineer to build, scale, and secure the infrastructure that powers depthfirst. You’ll own our cloud and Kubernetes environments alongside the production services that manage sandboxes, orchestrate workloads, and control compute resources throughout their lifecycle.

This role combines deep infrastructure expertise with hands‑on software engineering. You’ll design and develop infrastructure services and APIs, improve the reliability and efficiency of our systems, and strengthen the security of our compute environments. Your work will span application code, distributed systems, containers, networking, and cloud infrastructure.

You’ll own systems from architecture and implementation through deployment and ongoing operation. As depthfirst grows, you’ll shape how we scale our platform while keeping it reliable, secure, and straightforward to operate.
