Job summary

Skokie Public Library is seeking an IT Assistant Manager to assist the IT Manager in administering the department, lead infrastructure projects, and mentor IT staff. The role focuses on network, servers, security, and cloud services to support library operations.

The incumbent will collaborate with staff and vendors to plan budgets, standards, and day-to-day IT operations while ensuring reliable services for patrons and staff alike.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in CS/IT/networking.
  • 3+ years of enterprise network/infrastructure experience.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux and Windows servers.
  • Supervisory or technical-lead experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, and administer wired and wireless networks and servers.
  • Implement security controls, monitoring, and recovery procedures.
  • Respond to incidents, diagnose root causes, and implement fixes.

Job description

IT Assistant Manager

Pay Grade: 10 (exempt)

Full-time

Assists the Information Technology Manager in administering and operating the Information Technology Department and provides technical leadership for the library’s network and infrastructure environment. Responsible for the design, administration, security, maintenance, monitoring, reliability, and improvement of network infrastructure, virtual environments, servers, and related technologies. Evaluates and implements technology improvements and leads infrastructure projects and initiatives. Assists with departmental planning, budgeting, standards and procedures, and day-to-day IT operations. Serves as a senior technical resource and provides supervision, technical guidance, and training to IT Specialist staff. Assumes designated responsibilities of the Information Technology Manager in the manager’s absence.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, Cybersecurity, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and relevant experience
  • Three or more years of progressively responsible experience administering and supporting enterprise network and infrastructure environments, including switching, routing, wireless networking, firewalls, and network security
  • Demonstrated experience administering Unix/Linux and Windows server environments
  • At least one year of experience supervising staff or serving in a formal technical‑lead role
Minimum Competencies:
  • Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP networking, including IPv4, subnetting, VLANs, switching, routing, DNS, DHCP, NTP, NAT, VPNs, and related network services and protocols
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise network security, including firewall administration, network segmentation, secure remote access, authentication, least privilege, vulnerability remediation, and secure configuration practices
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise wired and wireless network architecture, administration, monitoring, and troubleshooting
  • Proficiency administering Unix/Linux and Windows server environments, including configuration, security, patching, logging, troubleshooting, and command‑line administration
  • Proficiency administering virtualization and enterprise storage environments
  • Proficiency administering backup and recovery systems and testing recovery procedures
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 technologies and related cloud, identity, and directory services, including Active Directory, Group Policy, Microsoft Entra ID, and authentication concepts
  • Working knowledge of modern endpoint operating systems, including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, and their interaction with enterprise network and identity services
  • Ability to use scripting tools for routine administration and information gathering
  • Demonstrated ability to systematically troubleshoot complex infrastructure problems and perform root‑cause analysis
  • Ability to mentor technical staff and promote consistent technical standards and practices
  • Ability to maintain accurate network diagrams, system documentation, configurations, procedures, inventories, and recovery documentation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Lead complex technical projects and effectively delegate work
    • Establish priorities and manage multiple initiatives and deadlines
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, vendors, and other stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A current CCNA, CCNP, or comparable networking certification
  • Experience independently administering enterprise firewalls, including firewall policies, VPNs, and network segmentation
  • Experience designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting enterprise wireless networks
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365 and other cloud services
Preferred Competencies:
  • Ability to design, evaluate, and improve network and infrastructure architecture
  • Demonstrated ability to design and maintain reusable infrastructure automation
  • Ability to analyze infrastructure performance, capacity, lifecycle, and security needs and make proactive recommendations
  • Knowledge of modern network security principles and practices, including Zero Trust, identity‑based access, and network access control
  • Bilingual skills in English plus another language relevant to the Skokie community
Essential Functions:
  • Designs, configures, and administers network and infrastructure systems, including wired and wireless networks, firewalls, Unix/Linux and Windows servers, virtualization, and storage
  • Implements and maintains network and infrastructure security controls, including firewall policies, network segmentation, secure remote access, system hardening, authentication, logging, and vulnerability remediation
  • Responds to network and infrastructure incidents and outages; diagnoses and resolves complex problems and identifies root causes and corrective actions
  • Administers and monitors backup and recovery systems; maintains and tests recovery procedures and supports disaster recovery planning and preparedness
  • Monitors system availability, performance, capacity, and security; performs maintenance, patching, upgrades, and other actions necessary to ensure reliable operation
  • Supports the administration, integration, and troubleshooting of Microsoft Windows Server and Microsoft 365 technologies and related cloud services; supports the deployment and troubleshooting of network‑based applications and remote access technologies
  • Plans, coordinates, and leads complex technology projects in collaboration with staff, vendors, and other stakeholders
  • Consults with staff and other stakeholders to identify technology needs; evaluates emerging technologies and recommends and implements improvements to systems, services, security, and user experience
  • Supervises, trains, and mentors IT Specialist staff; establishes priorities, delegates work, provides technical guidance, and assists with performance evaluations
  • Maintains accurate network diagrams, system documentation, configurations, procedures, inventories, recovery documentation, and project documentation
  • Assists with departmental planning, budgeting, technology standards and procedures, and coordination of day‑to‑day IT operations
  • Assumes designated responsibilities of the Information Technology Manager in the manager’s absence
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies, library operations, industry practices, and emerging trends through ongoing professional development
  • Maintains regular, predictable, and punctual attendance
Other Functions:
  • Provide technology support to staff as needed
  • May develop and deliver formal technology training and presentations for staff, Board of Trustees, or the public
  • May serve on library committees
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
