Job summary

Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI seeks an experienced Infection Preventionist to detect, document, and prevent healthcare-associated infections across patients, staff, and visitors. You will report to the Infection Prevention Manager and implement hospital policies using clinical judgment.

Qualifications

  • Must have a Master’s Degree in Public Health or a clinical equivalent as listed
  • Professional experience in hospital infection prevention and compliance with CDC/Joint Commission guidelines preferred
  • Strong ability to analyze data and document infection trends and outbreaks
  • Excellent written and verbal communication for reporting and training

Job description

  • Detect, document, analyze, and prevent infections occurring in Bronson Methodist Hospital patients, staff, and visitors
  • Report to the Infection Prevention Manager
  • Implement Bronson infection prevention policy using critical decisions and clinical judgments
  • Delegate selected tasks within scope of practice to the department administrative assistant and on-call Infection Preventionist
  • Review medical records, hospital reports, and data to detect nosocomial infections and write infection reports
  • Perform daily infection control unit rounds for surveillance for patients of all ages
  • Identify and document nosocomial infections using CDC definitions
  • Assist with outbreak investigations
  • Monitor patients in special precautions daily
  • Consult with employees, physicians, patients, and families regarding Infection Control
  • Serve as institutional consultant for infectious disease outbreaks and community bioterrorism activity
  • Teach infection control modules during new employee orientation and review computer-based continuing education modules
  • Assess staff and physician compliance with infection control policies and practices
  • Perform daily surveillance and annual unit environmental rounds, correcting problems through education and behavior modification techniques
  • Assist in reviewing and editing infection control policies across Bronson departments and corporations
  • Report reportable diseases daily to local health departments as required by Michigan regulations
  • Record relevant work activities for billing and workload functions
  • Represent the department in frequent committee meetings
  • Attend at least one statewide or national meeting annually and report new information to the department
  • Attend relevant local continuing education events
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Must have one of the following: Master's degree in Public Health; Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or Microbiology; Bachelor's degree in nursing or a clinical field
  • An equivalent combination of education and professional experience may be considered
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a hospital setting is required
  • Must attain and maintain competence in the current knowledge base supporting infection prevention, including CDC and Joint Commission guidelines, State of Michigan regulations, and infection prevention professional literature
  • Familiarity with Bronson quality improvement processes and techniques
  • Familiarity with the IC section of current Joint Commission standards
  • Demonstrated competency in electronic information systems, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, statistical analysis, data presentation, internet searches, and consulting websites
  • Must have a high level of interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to verbally communicate important information in a timely manner
  • Must work closely with diverse groups and departments within and outside Bronson Healthcare Group
  • Ability to produce accurate, complete, legible written reports and charting
  • Ability to exercise discretion when communicating with physicians, healthcare workers, patients, and families
  • Ability to perform regular walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and some light lifting
  • Ability to sustain CRT work and considerable hand/eye coordination for extended periods
