Job summary

RETA is seeking a skilled Utility Systems Operator to safely start up, operate, and maintain critical boiler, refrigeration, HVAC, and water treatment equipment in our Solon, Ohio facility. The role requires hands-on problem solving and strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards.

You will monitor system conditions, perform preventive maintenance, document activities, and collaborate with maintenance teams and external contractors to ensure continuous utility availability.

Qualifications

  • 3 - 5 years of experience operating, repairing, and maintaining utility systems (boilers, refrigeration, HVAC, water treatment, steam/condensate).
  • State Boiler Operator License or Stationary Engineer License OR CIRO.

Responsibilities

  • Safely start up, operate, adjust, and shut down utility systems.
  • Monitor gauges and alarms to maintain proper pressures and levels.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical components.
  • Respond to alarms and coordinate support for complex issues.
  • Maintain logs and documentation per requirements.
  • Communicate system conditions and risks to leadership.
  • Support system upgrades and capital maintenance projects.
  • Work with maintenance teams and external contractors.
  • Follow all safety, quality, housekeeping, and standard work practices.

Job description

Responsibilities


  • Safely start up, operate, adjust, and shut down utility systems, including steam/hot water boilers, ammonia/CO refrigeration, compressed air, HVAC, glycol, and water treatment systems

  • Monitor gauges, instruments, alarms, and system readings to maintain proper pressure, temperature, and fluid levels

  • Perform routine inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and preventive maintenance to support equipment reliability and uptime

  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical components such as valves, pumps, compressors, controls, and motors

  • Respond to alarms, malfunctions, and emergency calls; elevate complex issues and coordinate support when needed

  • Maintain accurate logs and documentation for readings, inspections, maintenance, and system checks in line with company and regulatory requirements

  • Communicate system conditions, risks, and needed actions to leadership and production teams

  • Support system upgrades and assist with capital or extraordinary maintenance projects

  • Work collaboratively with maintenance, operations, and external contractors to ensure continuous utility availability

  • Follow all required procedures for safety, quality, housekeeping, and standard work practices


Requirements


  • 3 - 5 years of experience operating, repairing, and maintaining utility systems such as boilers, refrigeration, HVAC, water treatment, steam/condensate, and associated equipment

  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems in an industrial environment

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent

  • State Boiler Operator License or Stationary Engineer License OR Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator (CIRO)

  • Ability to read and understand English for safety procedures, work instructions, and documenting maintenance activities clearly

  • Ability to work off-shifts, weekends, overtime, and extended shifts as needed


Physical Requirements


  • Physical requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation): Able to lift up to 50 lbs, move throughout your shift, varying temperatures, and work safely in loud areas and confined spaces


Skills


  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across mechanical and electrical systems

  • Knowledge of boiler operations, safety procedures, and utility system operations (including basic water chemistry)

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently while staying connected with the team

  • Clear verbal and written communication skills for shift handoffs, documentation, and issue escalation

  • Intermediate computer skills using maintenance/log systems and tools such as SAP and Microsoft Office

  • Consistent focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement (including participation in Lean/standard work/TPM-style activities where applicable)
