Job summary

Sonoco in Akron, IN is seeking an Industrial Maintenance Reliability Technician I-III to support maximum plant reliability by performing proactive maintenance, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.

You will work safety, perform preventive and predictive maintenance, and participate in continuous improvement. Lead or planner duties may be assigned at the location.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in maintaining mechanical, electrical, robotic/automation, hydraulic, pneumatic, and steam systems.
  • Ability to read mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical schematics (including PLC logic).
  • Experience with CMMS and safety compliance (NFPA 70E).
  • Welding, fabrication, and use of shop equipment as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform proactive maintenance to maximize plant reliability and reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Troubleshoot failures, conduct root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Document maintenance activities in CMMS to build asset history.
  • Install, repair, and maintain mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and automation systems.
  • Lead or assist as Maintenance Planner as needed by location.

Job description

Position: Industrial Maintenance Reliability Technician I-III.

Location: Akron, IN.

Wage: $28.62- $41.05.

Shift: 3rd- 11pm - 7am with OT as required.

Reporting to the Plant Engineer, the Industrial Maintenance Reliability Technician (IMRT) is responsible for supporting the achievement of maximum plant reliability by performing maintenance tasks and activities as an owner of Sonoco’s Maintenance Excellence Process. Maintenance and reliability best practices will be utilized to maintain equipment in optimum condition, maximize availability, and support technological advancement.

The IMRT will use advanced multi-craft training and knowledge to perform proactive equipment/process/system maintenance; troubleshoot failures, perform highly effective root cause analysis, and make repairs in a manner that minimizes the potential for repeat failures; and actively participate in Sonoco’s continuous improvement effort.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Understand and comply with safety policies and procedures. Perform all tasks in a safe manner, set the standard for safe behavior, look out for co-workers’ safety, and actively own the safety improvement process by identifying and reducing safety risks and hazards in behavior, equipment, and processes.
  • Proactively maintain, improve, install, troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, robotic/automation, hydraulic, pneumatic, and steam systems/processes/equipment.
    • Install, troubleshoot and maintain AC and DC drives/motors.
    • Effectively perform troubleshooting activities on PLC programs and modify and/or write PLC programs as required.
    • Weld as required by location.
    • Fabricate and install various electrical, piping, pneumatic, and mechanical equipment.
    • Perform shop work using machining and shop equipment such as lathes, drills, and milling machines.
    • Safely and effectively troubleshoot and assess equipment issues/failures; implement appropriate corrective actions.
    • Conduct thorough root cause analysis and follow up to ensure optimum corrective action; assist in developing procedures to drive to zero failure.
    • Drive proactive maintenance to eliminate unplanned failures; perform preventive and predictive maintenance tasks and develop and improve procedures.
    • Communicate effectively with operations personnel to identify and resolve abnormal equipment conditions that could impact safety, quality, or productivity; help develop operator skill sets.
    • Effectively document all maintenance activity in the CMMS to build an accurate database of asset history.
    • Assist in identifying opportunities to improve equipment inspection, lubrication and access for new and existing equipment.
    • Identify and utilize proper tools for each job.
    • Meet or exceed housekeeping and 5S standards across all maintenance areas.
    • The IMRT Senior role may serve in a Lead or Maintenance Planner role as required by the location.

  • Demonstrated competency in the skills laid out in the competency matrix for each of the IMRT classifications (I, II, III, & Sr).
  • Technical skills and knowledge to proactively maintain, improve, install, troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, robotic/automation, hydraulic, pneumatic, and steam systems/processes/equipment.
    • Ability to read and understand mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical schematics (including PLC program logic).
  • Working knowledge and experience in performing electrical work in compliance with NFPA 70E – Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace.
  • Welding skill level appropriate to the Sonoco location.
  • Machining / Fabrication skill level appropriate to the Sonoco location.
  • Proficiency with standard computer programs (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Proficiency in using a CMMS.
  • Ability to adapt to and lead change.
  • Ability to master and employ new skills as required by new processes, technology, or advancement opportunities within the maintenance organization.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
  • Strong proactive maintenance and reliability thought process.
Minimum Education Required
  • High school diploma (preferably with a vocational focus).
Preferred Education
  • Associate’s degree in Mechatronics, Industrial Maintenance, or related technical field.
Minimum Experience (Preferred)
  • IMRT I – 4+ years.
  • IMRT II – 6+ years.
  • IMRT III – 8+ years.
  • IMRT Sr – 10+ years.
