Job summary

Brown & Root Industrial Services is seeking an experienced Journeyman insulation technician to read blueprints, select appropriate insulation materials, and perform installations on equipment, pipes, and tanks. The role emphasizes accurate material selection and adherence to safety procedures on site.

Responsibilities include setting up the work area, measuring and cutting insulation, and sealing surfaces with appropriate covers and sealants while following hazardous waste guidelines.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; field experience preferred.
• Ability to read blueprints and interpret instructions.
• Journeyman-level experience in insulation or related craft.

Responsibilities

• Reads and interprets blueprints, instructions, and other documentation or plans work activities.
• Determines materials and insulation type based on heat retention, location, surface, and equipment use.
• Moves materials to work sites and sets up the work area.
• Covers or seals insulation surfaces with covers, sealants, tape, or cement.
• Fits insulation around obstructions and shapes materials as required.
• Installs sheet metal around insulated pipes for weather protection and damage prevention.
• Measures and cuts insulation using tape measures and saws.
• Prepares surfaces with adhesives or cement before insulation application.
• Covers insulation with protective covers or tape, securing to structure as needed.
• Follows hazardous waste handling guidelines and safety rules.

Journeyman - Typically 3 years and above documented field experience in chosen craft discipline with ability to read and interpret instructions and document, plan and perform work activities independently.

SUMMARY

Apply, remove, and repair insulation on equipment, pipes, ductwork, or other mechanical systems such as heat exchangers, hot and cold pipes, storage tanks and vessels, to help control noise and maintain temperatures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Reads and interprets blue prints, instructions, and other documentation or plan work activities.
• Determines the amounts and selects required insulation material (in sheet, tubular, or roll form), such as fiberglass, foam rubber, Styrofoam, cork, or urethane, based on material's ability to retain heat, location, surface, shape, and equipment use.
• Moves materials and equipment to work locations and sets up work site.
• Cover, seal, or finish insulated surfaces or access holes with plastic covers, canvas strips, sealants, tape, cement or asphalt mastic.
• Fit insulation around obstructions, and shape insulating materials and protective coverings as required.
• Install sheet metal around insulated pipes with screws in order to protect the insulation from weather conditions or physical damage
• Measure and cut insulation for covering surfaces, using tape measures, handsaws, knives, and scissors.
• Prepare surfaces for insulation application by brushing or spreading on adhesives, cement, or asphalt, or by attaching metal pins to surfaces.
• Covers or seals insulation with preformed plastic covers, canvas strips, sealant, or tape to secure insulation to structure, according to type of insulation used and structure covered, using staple gun, trowel, paintbrush, or caulking gun.
• Follows all hazardous waste handling guidelines.
• May remove or seal off old asbestos insulation, following safety procedures.
• Completes records, maintains tools and equipment, and performs various clean-up and housekeeping activities.
• Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment. Performs other duties as required

JOB STEP

• Journeyman - Typically 3 years and above documented field experience in chosen craft discipline with ability to read and interpret instructions and document, plan and perform work activities independently.
• Certified Journeyman - Requires attainment of NCCER certifications written and/or practical.
• Leadman - Provides leadership, instruction, and guidance to other craft workers in work crew, providing assistance to Foreman, while working in the capacity of a journeyman.

Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
