Job description

Industrial Hygiene & Safety (IHS) Specialist

Idaho Falls, ID

At Lightbridge, we’re pioneering advanced nuclear fuel technology that’s designed to make reactors safer, more efficient, and more responsive to global energy needs. Our mission is bold and we’re looking for equally bold thinkers to help us bring it to life. If you thrive at the intersection of engineering and regulatory strategy, this is your opportunity to help shape the future of clean energy.

Overview:

The Industrial Hygiene & Safety (IHS) Specialist is the lead responsible engineer for conventional industrial safety and occupational health at Lightbridge's pilot HALEU metallic fuel fabrication facility. This role owns the non-radiological hazard controls that are integral to a metal fuel fabrication operation — including chemical, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and airborne hazards from melting, extrusion, machining, and material handling processes — and ensures the facility's industrial safety program meets OSHA and DOE/NRC-adjacent expectations. The IHS Specialist works side by side with Radiological Controls and Engineering to ensure combined radiological and industrial hazards are controlled through an integrated hazard analysis rather than in isolation.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as lead responsible engineer for industrial hygiene and conventional safety programs, including hazard identification, exposure assessment, and control implementation across all fabrication process areas.
  • Develop and maintain job hazard analyses (JHAs) and integrate them with radiological work permits so combined hazards (e.g., chemical fume plus airborne contamination during melting) are controlled as a single hazard picture.
  • Own industrial hygiene monitoring programs for chemical exposures (e.g., process fumes, solvents, cleaning agents), noise, heat stress, and ergonomic hazards associated with VAR/VAR-Skull melting, co-extrusion, and machining operations.
  • Manage respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and other OSHA-mandated occupational health programs, including medical surveillance coordination.
  • Lead confined space, lockout/tagout, hot work, and machine guarding programs for facility equipment.
  • Support Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and facility safety basis reviews by providing industrial safety input for new or modified processes as the facility scales from pilot to production.
  • Investigate industrial safety incidents and near-misses, perform causal analysis, and track corrective actions to closure.
  • Maintain OSHA recordkeeping (300/300A logs) and support regulatory inspections and audits related to conventional safety.
  • Develop and deliver industrial safety training and qualification programs for operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel.
  • Partner with the Nuclear Facility Manager and Radiological Controls Manager on emergency preparedness planning for non-radiological emergency scenarios (chemical release, fire, medical).

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field.
  • Minimum 5 years of industrial hygiene or safety engineering experience in a manufacturing, metals processing, or industrial facility environment.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of OSHA General Industry standards (29 CFR 1910), including PPE, respiratory protection, and hazardous materials handling requirements.
  • Experience developing and implementing job hazard analyses and exposure monitoring programs.
  • Ability to work effectively alongside radiological controls personnel to integrate combined-hazard controls in a mixed industrial/radiological environment.
  • Strong documentation skills, with experience preparing procedures, JHAs, and regulatory recordkeeping.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential, or actively pursuing certification.
  • Experience in a metals melting, casting, or extrusion environment (uranium alloy experience a strong plus).
  • Familiarity with combined radiological/industrial hazard facilities and integrated safety management systems (ISMS).
  • Experience supporting facility startup, readiness reviews, or process hazard analyses for new manufacturing lines.
