Job summary

SABIC in Ottawa, USA is seeking an Industrial Hygiene Engineer, EHSS to ensure site compliance with IH regulations across Shared Services locations. You will lead IH programs, perform air monitoring, and develop plans addressing asbestos, ergonomics, and other hazards.

Ideal candidates have 3+ years in chemical/industrial settings, strong communication skills, and hands-on experience with air sampling pumps, dosimeters, PID/LEL meters, and SDS management.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years relevant experience in chemical/industrial setting or BS degree in Industrial Hygiene or related field.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and IT applications.
• Knowledge of occupational exposure pathways and control strategies; experience with air sampling equipment and direct-reading instruments.
• Provide technical direction and execution of Industrial Hygiene programs.
• Knowledge of industrial hygiene principles and workplace hazards.
• Organizational skills to balance priorities between immediate work and longer-term strategic efforts.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain IH plans in compliance with regulatory requirements (asbestos, ergonomics, hazard communication, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, etc.).
• Conduct IH surveillance, workplace inspections, exposure monitoring, and sampling analysis.
• Monitor IH reports and communicate findings to employees after testing.
• Evaluate engineering controls and advise on equipment design, placement, and maintenance.
• Provide IH support in laboratory settings and training materials for site procedures.
• Lead IH self-assessments or audits for the site and drive hazard identifications.

Job Summary

The Industrial Hygiene Engineer, EHSS is responsible for ensuring that the sites in the Shared Services Organization (Ottawa, Bay St. Louis, and Tampico) maintain compliance with industrial hygiene regulations. The position has several essential functions and responsibilities.

How You Can Be the Impact

• This role is responsible for comprehensive Industrial Hygiene activities with an understanding of air monitoring methods, sample handling, data analysis, ventilation, lighting, radiation, use of air monitoring equipment and report writing.
• Develop, implement, and maintain an approved Industrial Hygiene (IH) plan in accordance with appropriate regulatory requirements, covering programs such as asbestos, ergonomics, hazard communication, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, thermal stress, indoor air quality, and other occupational health hazards.
• Conduct IH surveillance and assessments, including workplace inspections, exposure monitoring, and collection/analysis of field samples.
• Monitor and analyze the Industrial Hygiene reports and provide appropriate communication to employees after IH testing has been completed.
• Determines effectiveness of engineering control methods and makes recommendations regarding location, design, structure, operations, and maintenance of new/modified equipment.
• Provides industrial hygiene support within laboratory settings.
• Determine remediation/restoration protocols to address asbestos, lead, mold, moisture and other environmental hazards.
• Ability to author/amend clear/concise training materials and site‑specific procedures pertaining to Industrial Hygiene.
• Participates and/or leads portions of IH self‑assessments or audits acting as the site representative for industrial hygiene.
• Proactively identifying potential hazards, such as analyzing safety data sheets (SDS) or evaluating new processes before they start.
• Maintaining the SDS system for each site.

• Provide technical direction and execution of Industrial Hygiene programs.
• Knowledge of the principles of industrial hygiene and workplace hazards
• Organizational skills to balance priorities between immediate work and longer‑term strategical efforts.

Physical Requirements: Walk for extended distances, climb stairs & ladders, leaning/kneeling to view equipment.

Eligibility Requirements (Regional Specific):

• You must be 18 years or older
• Applicants must be currently authorized to work for SABIC in the United States on a full-time basis.

Work Availability

Regular, predictable attendance is an essential function of this position. Applicants must be regularly available and willing to work during assigned hours of operation and such other hours as the company determines are necessary or desirable to meet business needs. Applicants must be willing and capable to travel up to 25% of working time, domestic/international.
