AlaskaJobs is seeking seasonal Lead Recreation Specialist for the Parks and Recreation Department in Anchorage. The role leads entry-level staff delivering park and facility activities, ensures safe, engaging programs, and supports reservations and customer service.

These are seasonal, positions (working 40 hours per week), and will end approximately six (6) months after date of hire.
Employees who are initially hired for any Seasonal position shall be placed at Step 3 (17.53), and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

Under supervision, the Lead Recreation Specialist position leads entry-level staff that is responsible for delivering parks and recreation activities within Anchorage parks and facilities. This position leads and guides participants, organizes and directs activities, and cleans facilities and grounds as directed. Employees in this classification work with independence and initiative within the Department's established policies and procedures to perform as an entry-level lead. As an entry-level lead, employees in this position are expected to provide safe recreational and learning environments. Provide excellent customer service in-person, via phone and via email. Schedule and provide routine information concerning reservations of training and activities. Coordinate and maintain database for reservations of facilities, training, and activities. Perform other duties as assigned.

year experience in the program or activity under consideration. Prior experience in the use of recreational equipment is required.
Preference will be given to Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employees. AMEA employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any non-AMEA applicants.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the candidate's Alaska Driver's License, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly, it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from the date requested. The processing fee of $47.00 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable), is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.
Effective October 1, 2026, the processing fee will increase to $50.00.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of current American Red Cross First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certifications or the equivalent.
All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
