Job summary

The City of San José invites applications for the Office of the Independent Police Auditor (IPA). This senior oversight role leads a small team and drives independent review of police misconduct investigations.

The IPA provides objective oversight, ensures investigations are thorough and fair, and conducts outreach to strengthen trust with the community. The appointment includes a strong benefits package and a four-year term.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
• Five years of experience in criminal law and criminal procedure.
• Member in good standing with a state bar; California Bar license may be required.
• Not a sworn law enforcement officer for at least ten years; no close family members who are sworn officers.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and supervise the IPA Office’s work in reviewing SJPD investigations.
• Review investigations for completeness, thoroughness, objectivity, and fairness.
• Engage with the community to instill public confidence in IPA operations.
• Prepare an annual public report to City Council.
• Participate in SJPD panels and advise on policy improvements.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university

Juris Doctor (Law degree) desirable

California Bar license
