Job summary

The Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) in Cambridge is seeking an Inclusion Facilitator to provide direct support for adapting and modifying after-school programs to meet the needs of identified children. You will be supervised by the site supervisor with guidance from the Inclusion Initiative of DHSP.

Ideal candidates will have experience with youth in grades K-8, a basic understanding of children's needs from multiple perspectives, and a willingness to learn Positive Behavior Support

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support and build relationships with children and adults in the program.
  • Maintain a positive, inclusive environment for the youth in the program.
  • Communicate with site supervisor and Inclusion Initiative; attend staff meetings.
  • Share in classroom responsibilities (activity planning, setup, breakdown, maintenance).
  • Provide proximity support to identified children.
  • Develop and implement accommodations with Inclusion Specialist.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICE PROGRAMS:

The Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) creates and coordinates services that enhance the quality of life for Cambridge residents. Driven by the needs of residents, DHSP's extensive services and programs touch almost every sector in the city: from newborns to senior citizens, from school-aged children to homeless families, from non-profit organizations to local employers.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Inclusion Facilitator will provide direct support in adapting and modifying programs to meet the needs of a specific child or children enrolled in a DHSP After-School Programs. The Inclusion Facilitator will be supervised directly by the site supervisor in each program with support and guidance provided by the Inclusion Initiative of DHSP. DHSP offers a range of safe and engaging after-school programming to Cambridge children, youth, and teens.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work to support and create relationships with all children and adults in designated program.
  • Work as a team to create and maintain a positive, inclusive environment for the youth in the program.
  • Maintain consistent communication with site supervisor as well as the Inclusion Initiative and attend all staff meetings.
  • Share in classroom responsibilities as assigned by site supervisor (activity planning, set up and break down and classroom maintenance/classroom cleaning).
  • Provide proximity support to identified children at all times.
  • In conjunction with the Inclusion Specialist and other team members, develop and implement accommodations to meet the needs of identified children.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience
  • 2 years practical experience working with youth grades K-8.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of children's needs from a behavioral, clinical, and school based perspective.
  • Have a basic understanding and/or willingness to be trained in Positive Behavior Support techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrate understanding of Child Development
  • 2 years' experience working with youth who have diverse and special needs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This position is subject to Background Records check which can include: Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, Sexual Offender Record Information (SORI) check, Department of Children and Families (DCF) check, and fingerprinting. A copy of a recent physical is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, WORK FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMODATIONS:
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate to very loud. The work environment includes classroom and outdoor playgrounds and occasional field trips.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, walk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to run, during play or responding to an emergency.
  • Employees are frequently required to engage with children on the floor and at their eye level. Employees are frequently required to use their hands and arms to handle and manipulate objects as well as reach. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move a child.
  • Vision abilities are required for supervision of children.
