Job summary

The Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Central District of California is seeking full-time assistant investigators stationed in Los Angeles, CA. The role supports attorneys with a full range of investigative tasks and record retrieval across criminal, civil, and other matters.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree or 1+ year of relevant experience, strong Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat skills, and the ability to manage priorities to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or at least one year of relevant investigative experience.
• Strong computer literacy with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
• Ability to organize work and meet critical deadlines.
• Experience conducting online searches and using databases.
• Spanish or other languages preferred but not required.
• Valid driver's license and insured vehicle.
• Varying hours including nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.

Responsibilities

• Provide a full range of investigative support for attorneys and investigators.
• Retrieve criminal, civil, juvenile, medical, and educational records electronically and in person; conduct searches.
• Document records requests; maintain all releases and keep them up to date.
• Assist with field investigations, including door knocks and serving subpoenas.
• Assist with expert vetting and provide additional case support as needed.
