SCHOOL VOLUNTEER

Department: School Site

Reports To: Principal or Designee

Classification: Volunteer (Non-Paid)

FLSA Status: Not Applicable

Position Summary

School Volunteers provide valuable support to Bisbee Unified School District by assisting teachers, staff, and students in a variety of educational and extracurricular activities. Volunteers enhance the educational experience by contributing their time and talents while serving under the direct supervision of district personnel. Volunteers supplement, but do not replace, the work of district employees and are expected to uphold the mission, vision, and values of Bisbee Unified School District.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following statements describe the general responsibilities assigned to this position. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties.

  • Assist teachers with classroom preparation, instructional activities, and organizational tasks.
  • Support students individually or in small groups under the direct supervision of a certified staff member.
  • Read with students, practice academic skills, and encourage positive learning behaviors.
  • Assist with library, office, cafeteria, playground, and campus activities as assigned.
  • Support school events, family engagement activities, assemblies, field trips, and extracurricular programs.
  • Assist with preparing instructional materials, organizing supplies, filing, copying, and other clerical tasks.
  • Help maintain a safe, welcoming, and positive learning environment.
  • Follow directions provided by school administrators and staff.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding students, staff, and district operations in accordance with applicable laws and district policies.
  • Report safety concerns, accidents, injuries, or suspected child abuse immediately to a supervising staff member or administrator.
  • Comply with all district policies, procedures, visitor protocols, and campus safety expectations.
  • Sign in and out through the school's visitor management system and wear volunteer identification while on campus.
  • Complete all required volunteer orientation and training.
  • Perform other volunteer duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.

  • Demonstrates an interest in supporting student learning and school programs.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Effective oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, patience, flexibility, and good judgment.
  • Meets all district volunteer approval requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Ability to work respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
  • Ability to follow district procedures and staff direction.
  • Ability to adapt to changing assignments and campus needs.
  • Commitment to student safety and well-being.
  • Basic organizational and communication skills.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in classrooms, offices, libraries, cafeterias, gymnasiums, playgrounds, and other school facilities. Volunteers may be required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, or lift classroom materials. The work environment includes the normal conditions associated with public schools.

Physical Requirements

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform volunteer assignments.

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 20 pounds.
  • Bend, kneel, reach, and stoop.
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff.
  • Perform repetitive hand and arm movements associated with classroom or clerical tasks.

Volunteer Requirements

Prior to providing volunteer services, individuals must:

  • Complete the Bisbee Unified School District Volunteer Application.
  • Successfully complete any required background check and fingerprint clearance as determined by district policy and Arizona law.
  • Complete district-required volunteer orientation and applicable training.
  • Follow all district safety, confidentiality, and student supervision expectations.
  • Comply with all campus visitor procedures.

Volunteers are expected to:

  • Support the mission, vision, and goals of Bisbee Unified School District.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and respect in all interactions.
  • Protect the confidentiality and privacy of students and staff.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students at all times.
  • Refer student discipline and behavioral concerns to district employees.
  • Refrain from administering medication, providing transportation, or performing duties reserved for district employees unless specifically authorized.
  • Model positive citizenship and appropriate behavior.
  • Notify the school if unable to report for a scheduled volunteer assignment.
