Job summary

Minnehaha County is seeking a Juvenile Correctional Officer to provide safety and mentorship for youth, acting as a trusted role model during a pivotal time in their lives. This position starts January 2027, with a deadline of November 4, 2026 for applications.

Responsibilities include creating a safe environment, guiding youth, de-escalation, and coordinating with partners to support positive outcomes while working a rotating 24/7 schedule with training provided.

Qualifications

• Two years of post-secondary education and related experience OR one year of experience working with at-risk youth, in corrections, or in a similarly structured environment.
• A valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
• Experience in criminal justice, behavioral health, education, social services, residential care, military service, or youth programming is valuable.

Responsibilities

• Create a safe and secure environment by supervising youth throughout daily activities.
• Provide guidance and encouragement by helping youth navigate challenges and make positive decisions.
• Use communication and de-escalation skills to reduce conflict and support youth through moments of crisis.
• Build structure and consistency by enforcing facility expectations and procedures.
• Lead and support daily programming by organizing educational, recreational, and life-skills activities.
• Monitor progress and document important information to support decision-making.
• Support youth and families by providing guidance and collaboration with partners.
• Assist with admissions, releases, transportation, and facility operations.
• Support the juvenile justice process by gathering information and connecting youth and families with resources.
