Job summary

The Iowa Department of Corrections is seeking temporary non-merit Correctional Officers to support security operations and help inmates reform and reintegrate into society.

Responsibilities include observing and documenting inmate behavior, enforcing rules, conducting security checks and patrols, instructing inmates on procedures, and maintaining logs. Graduation from high school or GED is required; E-Verify participation is noted; CDL may be required for certain positions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must pass a background check and psychological tests.
• Health screen and drug testing required.
• Must complete new employee training during probation.
• Some positions require a Commercial Driver's License within time designated by the appointing authority.

Responsibilities

• Observe and document incarcerated individual behavior to ensure security.
• Utilize behavioral techniques to facilitate behavior change and problem-solving.
• Conduct security checks, patrols, and inspections to maintain safety and security.
• Instruct incarcerated individuals in rules, policies, procedures, and expectations for successful adaptation to life within an institution.
• Interact with the general public, visitors, and victims with professionalism and empathy.
• Maintain logs, prepare reports, and enter information into the DOC electronic record system.
