Job summary

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid in Minneapolis seeks a Fall 2026/Spring 2027 Student Law Clerk to support the Immigration Hub. The position is paid, part-time (~15 hours/week), in-person at Waite House with hybrid options.

You will interview clients, prepare asylum applications, perform legal research, and assist with intake at various clinics. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and a commitment to racial justice are valued; Spanish or other languages are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Interview clients and prepare immigration applications, focusing on intake screening and pro se asylum work.
• Conduct legal research on immigration policies and their impact on communities served.
• Attend monthly Hub consultations and pop-up clinics to screen community members for immigration relief.
• Attend LOP outreach days at ICE detention facilities in Minnesota.
• Collaborate with Regional Hub for New Americans and partner organizations.

We therefore devote special attention to racial justice issues.The Regional Hub for New AmericansThe Hub is a collaborative partnership of five immigration legal services providers in Minnesota: The Advocates for Human Rights (AHR), Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM), Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA), Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS), and Volunteer Lawyers Network (VLN).Together, these organizations are expanding access to immigration legal services throughout Minnesota through legal access points, education and community outreach, rapid-response triage, and coordinated intake and referral services.Immigration Law Project (ILP)The Immigration Law Project provides legal representation to clients in a full range of immigration matters, including removal and deportation defense, adjustment of status, citizenship, and VAWA-based cases, including U and T visas. This position will focus specifically on work completed in collaboration with the Regional Hub for New Americans.Primary Responsibilities• Apply the principles of MMLA's Racial Justice Values Statement in all interactions.• Interview clients and prepare immigration applications. Particular focus will be on intake screening and preparation of pro se asylum applications and other limited legal services for New Americans at the Waite House Community Clinic on Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.• Conduct legal research.• Investigate and research changing immigration policies and their impact on the communities we serve.• Attend monthly virtual Hub Consultation Clinics, as well as other pop-up clinics as schedules allow, to screen community members for immigration relief.• Attend Legal Orientation Program (LOP) outreach and screening days at ICE detention facilities in Minnesota.Required Qualifications• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.• Demonstrated interest in and commitment to serving low-income and vulnerable clients.• Excellent attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and oral and written communication skills.• Ability to manage multiple assignments while building collaborative relationships with clients, staff, and community members.• Ability to be present in person at the Waite House Clinic for all or most clinic hours on Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.Preferred Qualifications• Diverse economic, social, or cultural experiences.• Second-language proficiency, especially Spanish.
