Job summary

Brooklyn Defender Services is seeking an Immigration Attorney (Padilla) to join the criminal defense practice in the Brooklyn office. This exempt, salaried role will work under a Supervising Attorney to determine clients’ immigration status, assess relief options, and minimize immigration consequences of criminal proceedings.

Qualifications

• JD degree required and admitted to NY; ability to become admitted if not currently

Responsibilities

• Work with clients to determine immigration status, relief eligibility, and priorities in resolving cases in Brooklyn’s courts.
• Research New York criminal law and federal immigration consequences for various statutes.
• Draft immigration advocacy letters for plea negotiations or court submissions.
• Engage in oral advocacy with the District Attorney’s office.
• Appear in criminal courts to advocate for immigration-informed outcomes.
• Meet with clients in person at BDS offices, courthouses, or correctional facilities for intake and consultations.
• Advise Immigration Practice attorneys on immigration issues related to family courts.
• Maintain a docket of direct immigration representation cases before federal immigration agencies and courts.
• Appear in person and virtually in immigration courts, federal courts, and immigration offices as needed.
• Maintain case files and notes in the digital case management system.
• Staff on-call shifts during evenings and weekends; on-call shifts are fully remote.
• Additional responsibilities as assigned.
