Job summary

The Legal Aid Society seeks two attorneys for the Immigrant Justice Team within the Criminal Defense Practice in New York City. One position will be based in the Queens CDP office, the other is to be determined.

You will advise clients on immigration consequences of criminal arrests and work to mitigate those consequences while delivering holistic, client-centered representation. Requirements include NYS Bar admission and at least 3 years of criminal defense or Crim-Imm experience.

Qualifications

• Excellent research, writing, analytical, oral advocacy, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team and to manage challenging, varied, and complex cases.

Responsibilities

• Be part of the defense team representing non-citizen clients in criminal court.
• Consult with and advise non-citizen clients on immigration consequences of criminal cases and mitigate where possible.
• Train LAS staff and community members on criminal-immigration issues and emergent trends.
• Engage in policy advocacy on behalf of clients.
• Represent Criminal Defense Practice clients on immigration matters when needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Evening and weekend hours may be required.
