Job summary

DREAM is seeking dedicated Youth Workers at its Bronx program to support after-school activities for high school students. You will help lead engaging sports, SEL, enrichment, and academic support under the guidance of club leaders, in person at the DREAM Charter High School site.

We’re looking for individuals aged 18+, with a high school diploma, who are energetic, patient, and capable of building positive relationships with students and families while fostering growth and resilience through

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older by start date.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience with teens in education or youth programs preferred.
  • Experience with behavior management preferred.
  • Energetic, warm, patient, and able to work with diverse youth.
  • Ability to work in teams and communicate with families; in-person required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist club leaders in daily after-school activities for high school students.
  • Distribute snacks and materials effectively.
  • Support safe student transitions and positive participation.
  • Supervise groups during transitions and away games.
  • Assist with homework completion and academic enrichment.
  • Keep rosters and attendance records.
  • Help foster youth development using restorative approaches.
  • Participate in summer bridge program activities.

Originally founded in 1991 as Harlem RBI, DREAM has grown to annually serve more than 2,500 youth across East Harlem and the South Bronx through a network of seven PreK-12, extended-day, extended-year DREAM Charter Schools and community sports-based youth development programs. DREAM(formerly Harlem RBI) is seeking dynamic individuals toserve as Youth Workers in our high school program.

The Youth Worker will assist club leaders in leading a group of students daily in activities including sports, social-emotional learning, enrichment, and academic support programming.

This is an excellent opportunity to build your youth development skills while working with a passionate and supportive team.

Responsibilities
  • Assist club leaders in leading a group of high school students in daily after-school activities including sports, social-emotional learning, enrichment and academic support;
  • Distribute snack and materials effectively and efficiently;
  • Support the facilitation of positive, safe student transitions throughout the school;
  • Supervise groups of students during transitional times, such as student athletes waiting to depart for away games;
  • Support with homework completion and other academic enrichment;
  • Support club attendance and collecting rosters,
  • Model and encourage positive participation in all daily activities;
  • Model professionalism through consistent attendance, timeliness and preparation;
  • Manage youth behavior at all times using positive youth development strategies;
  • Using a restorative approach to manage student behaviors
  • Support summer bridge program, facilitating activities and attending trips for up to 30 rising freshmen;
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • 18 years of age or older by the start date for the role;
  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
  • Experience working successfully with teenagers in a classroom or other youth development setting, strongly preferred;
  • Experience with behavior management, including positive youth development, preferred;
  • Exhibits high energy, warmth, enthusiasm and patience in working with youth;
  • Ability to quickly problem-solve in the moment;
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team setting;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with families;
  • Comfort with technology and ability to use common platforms, including Zoom and Google Suite (Gmail and Gchat);
  • Eagerness to grow professionally, including openness to receiving and implementing feedback;
  • Flexibility: willing and able to shift tasks and priorities as needed;
  • Belief in the mission and outcomes of DREAM, including the importance of social emotional competency and advocacy for self and others;
  • Ability to work during the program hours;
  • Must be able to work in person at the program site;
  • A strong belief in the mission and values of DREAM, including the desire to make a difference in the lives of our students, families, and community.

Commitment
  • The salary rate for incoming Youth Workers is $17.50 to $18.00 per hour. Initial compensation is determined based on relevant youth-facing experience. Youth Workers are eligible for annual compensation increases based on tenure, in accordance with DREAM’s compensation practices. Compensation for Youth Workers who continue their employment with DREAM may exceed the incoming range band above.
