Job summary

Inter-American Development Bank is inviting an active undergraduate student to join its Winter Internship Program in Washington, DC. The two-month intern consultant role focuses on translation, terminology, and language tech within the IDB Group.

The program offers a paid opportunity with on-site work at HQ or country offices, providing hands-on experience in development and corporate management of the Bank. Applicants should be enrolled in an undergrad program with relevant language skills.

Qualifications

  • Active undergraduate in translation or related field with graduation after internship.

  • Experience with computer-assisted translation tools and terminology management software is desirable.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Use computer assisted translation tools to build translation memory databases.
  • Align official documents using alignment software.
  • Research terminology related to official Bank documents.
  • Develop in-house glossaries and style manuals.
  • Perform quality control to verify accuracy of documents.
  • Produce draft translations for revision by in-house revisers.
  • Assist in implementing language technology and analytics tools.

About this position

The IDB Group is looking for an active undergraduate student to be hired as an intern under the Consultant modality.

The 2027 Winter Internship Program is a competitive paid opportunity, based in Headquarters or Country Offices, for university students from member countries to learn about development work and corporate management of the Bank, and to acquire work experience at the professional level through on-the-job learning.

What you’ll do
  • Use specialized computer assisted translation tools to create dedicated translation memory databases that can be used to efficiently translate recurring text in IDB Group documents.
  • Align official documents using alignment software.
  • Conduct research and compile terminology related to official Bank documents.
  • Contribute to the development of in house glossaries and style manuals.
  • Conduct quality control reviews to verify the accuracy and completeness of documents.
  • Produce draft translations of IDB Group documents from any of the Bank’s official languages into the candidate’s mother tongue for revision and feedback by in house revisers.
  • Assist in the implementation of language technology and analytics tools.
What you'll need
  • Education: An active undergraduate student in Literature, Language Studies, Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Translation or a related discipline from an accredited university. The graduation date should be after the internship period.
  • Languages: Fluency in English with a native or working knowledge of one other Bank language (Spanish, French, or Portuguese).
  • KeySkills:Learn continuously,collaborateand share knowledge, focus on clients,communicateand influence,innovate and try new things.
  • Soft Skills: Results-driven, team-oriented, inclusive, collaborative, innovative, and client-oriented, with strong self-motivation, eagerness to learn, and excellent time management and communication skills. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Technical skills: Experience in using computer-assisted translation tools and terminology management software is desirable.
Requirements
  • Citizenship: Be a national of an IDB member country.
  • Active student: Enrolled in an undergraduate (bachelor’s) program as of the starting date of the internship program. The graduation date should be after the Internship period.
  • Consanguinity: Not have family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB or IDB Invest.
  • First job at the IDB Group: Be a first-time participant in an Internship Program held by the Bank or Inter-American Investment Corporation (“Corporation” also known as “IDB Invest”). In addition, you have not been a former staff member, Complementary Workforce (“CW”), contractor for the Bank or the Corporation, or have previously provided services to the Bank or the Corporation through a contractor or under any other contractual modality.
