Qualifications

  • Active graduate student in a relevant quantitative/computational field; graduation after internship.
  • Fluency in English; working knowledge of another Bank language (Spanish/French/Portuguese) is a plus.
  • Learn continuously, collaborate, focus on clients, communicate and innovate.
  • Strong time management, team collaboration and self-motivation.
  • Familiarity with GIS data analysis, ArcGIS/QGIS, and basic data management.

Responsibilities

  • Geospatial data research and cataloguing across official portals and datasets.
  • Organize and document GIS data lists and catalogs for team use.
  • Draft, review, and update internal GIS and data governance documents.
  • Support scripting/automation tasks using Python and JavaScript for GIS workflows.

About this position

The IDB Group is looking for an active graduate student to be hired as an intern under the Consultant modality.

The 2027 Winter Internship Program is a competitive paid opportunity, based in Headquarters, for university students from member countries to learn about development work and corporate management of the Bank, and to acquire work experience at the professional level through on-the-job learning.

What you’ll do
  • Geospatial Data Research & Cataloguing: Research and maintain a list of official geospatial data portals and open/free geospatial datasets by country, supporting the Environmental and Social Solutions Division (ESG).
  • Geospatial Information System (GIS) Data Organization: Help organize, update, and document GIS data lists and catalogues so they are easy for the team to find and use.
  • Documentation Support: Assist in drafting, reviewing, and updating internal GIS and data governance documents using existing guidelines and templates.
  • Scripting & Automation Support: Support basic scripting and automation tasks using Python and JavaScript, preferably with ArcGIS tools (ArcPy, ArcGIS API for Python, ArcGIS JavaScript API), to help improve simple GIS workflows.
What you'll need
  • Education: An active graduate student in a relevant quantitative and computational field, such as Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Urban Planning, or a related area at an accredited University. The graduation date should be after the Internship period.
  • Languages: Fluency in English with a working knowledge of one other Bank language (Spanish, French, or Portuguese) is a plus.
  • Key Skills: Learn continuously, collaborate and share knowledge, focus on clients, communicate and influence, innovate and try new things.
  • Soft Skills: Result-driven, collaborative, innovative, client-oriented, strong communicator, self-motivated, eager to learn, and excellent time management skills.
  • Technical skills:
    • Familiarity with analyzing geospatial data and creating maps using GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, or similar tools.
    • Basic skills in organizing and managing geospatial data in databases.
    • Ability to follow data management and governance guidelines.
    • Willingness to assist in quantitative and qualitative analysis tasks.
    • Interest in learning how to match the team’s needs with appropriate GIS tools and technologies.
    • Good understanding of Microsoft Excel or willingness to learn and apply Excel for data management and analysis.
    • Proficiency with other MS Office tools (Word, PowerPoint).
    • Basic understanding of how GIS is applied in international development projects.
Requirements
  • Citizenship: Be a national of an IDB member country.
  • Active student: Enrolled in a graduate (master’s or Ph.D.) program as of the start date of the internship program. The graduation date should be after the Internship period.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB or IDB Invest.
  • First job at the IDB Group: Be a first‑time participant in an Internship Program held by the Bank or Inter‑American Investment Corporation (“Corporation” also known as “IDB Invest”). In addition, you have not been a former staff member, Complementary Workforce (“CW”), contractor for the Bank or the Corporation, or have previously provided services to the Bank or the Corporation through a contractor or under any other contractual modality.
