Job summary

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) invites active graduate students to join the Winter Internship Program in Washington, DC. This paid internship runs January–March 2027 and works within the Internal Audit Quality Assurance and Improvement Program (QAIP).

You will support QAIP, participate in risk assessments, review fieldwork, and help improve audit guidance and tools through analytics and on-the-job learning.

Qualifications

  • Active graduate student in Auditing, Accounting, Risk Management from an accredited university, graduation after internship.
  • Fluency in English with working knowledge of one other Bank language (Spanish, French, Portuguese) is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills; collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Support QAIP through monitoring and reviews to ensure conformance with standards.
  • Assist with engagement-level risk assessments and alignment with objectives.
  • Review fieldwork documentation for completeness and supporting evidence.
  • Monitor implementation of management action plans and evidence.
  • Apply data analytics to improve guidance, tools, and training materials.

About this position

The IDB Group is looking for an active graduate student to be hired as an intern under the Consultant modality.

The 2027 Winter Internship Program is a competitive paid opportunity, based in Headquarters, for university students from member countries to learn about development work and corporate management of the Bank, and to acquire work experience at the professional level through on-the-job learning.

What you’ll do
  • Support the Quality Assurance and Improvement Program (QAIP) through ongoing monitoring and periodic reviews to confirm the internal audit function’s conformance with the Global Internal Audit Standards, applicable Topical Requirements, and internal audit methodologies.
  • Assist with quality reviews of the planning phase, with a focus on engagement-level risk assessments and their alignment with engagement objectives, scope, and evaluation criteria.
  • Support the review of fieldwork documentation and evidence underlying audit observations, helping confirm completeness, traceability, and adequate support for findings and conclusions.
  • Assist in monitoring the implementation of management action plans, tracking their status and confirming that supporting evidence adequately addresses the underlying findings.
  • Apply data analytics and contribute to continuous improvement efforts, strengthening QA oversight and helping translate insights into updated guidance, tools, and training materials across the function.
What you'll need
  • Education: An active graduate student in Auditing, Accounting, Risk Management, or related field(s) from an accredited University. The graduation date should be after the Internship period.
  • Languages: Fluency in English with a working knowledge of one other Bank language (Spanish, French, or Portuguese) is a plus.
  • Key Skills: Learn continuously, collaborate and share knowledge, focus on clients, communicate and influence, innovate and try new things
  • Soft Skills: Result-driven, collaborative, innovative, client-oriented, strong communicator, self-motivated, eager to learn, and excellent time management skills.
  • Technical skills:
    • Audit Lifecycle & Core Concepts — Understanding of the full engagement cycle (planning, risk assessment, fieldwork, documentation, reporting, and action-plan follow-up).
    • Risk Assessment & Critical Analysis — Ability to evaluate engagement-level risk assessments and their alignment with objectives, scope, and criteria.
    • Data Analytics & Technology — Familiarity with analytics and productivity tools (e.g., advanced Excel, Power BI) for trend analysis, exception testing, and coverage-gap identification, plus familiarity with GRC/audit-management platforms (e.g., TeamMate+) and Microsoft 365 AI-enabled tools such as Copilot.
    • Documentation, Communication & Research — Strong English technical writing and attention to detail for QA review notes, checklists, and status summaries, combined with research skills to synthesize professional standards and leading practices into guidance, templates, and training materials.
Requirements
  • Citizenship: Be a national of an IDB member country.
  • Active student: Enrolled in an undergraduate (bachelor’s) or graduate (master’s or Ph.D.) program as of the starting date of the internship program. The graduation date should be after the Internship period.
  • Consanguinity: Not have family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB or IDB Invest.
  • First job at the IDB Group: Be a first-time participant in an Internship Program held by the Bank or Inter-American Investment Corporation ("Corporation" also known as "IDB Invest"). In addition, you have not been a former staff member, Complementary Workforce ("CW"), contractor for the Bank or the Corporation, or have previously provided services to the Bank or the Corporation through a contractor or under any other contractual modality.

Notes:

  • Academic transcripts and university letters should be issued within the last three months.
    • For graduate students a minimum of 50% of coursework must be completed when applying.
  • Applications without the requested documentation will be disqualified.
  • You must be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) from January 16th to March 15th, 2027. These dates are fixed and cannot be modified. Interns must complete their assignments within this period.
  • If you are an international student in the U.S.A, your work authorization is through CPT or OPT. You must be able to work 40 hours per week, many international students are limited to working part-time, depending on their academic standing.
