Summary/Objective

Provides direct and indirect patient care in the acute care setting. Communicates with physicians/Nurse Manager/co-workers, as appropriate about changes in patient’s clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision.

  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. To include: neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric and the general patient population.
  • Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan as needed for effectiveness.
  • Ability to interpret results of waived tests; take appropriate action on waived tests results.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
  • Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition.
  • Follows the six (6) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist providers with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills for each department.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to level of licensure.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Supports a culture of quality and safety.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to Nurse Manager, co-workers, providers and family members.
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with other department staff, physicians, and all other areas of hospital.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicates with Social Service/Discharge Planner regarding both in hospital and post discharge needs.
  • Maintains accurate and continue nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses and assessment of changes.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Assists in cost containment through the appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives; maintains good employee relations and interdepartmental objectives.
  • Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency.
  • Prepares, hangs, monitors and discontinues IV fluids.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately.
  • Provides resource information to other staff.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager in the development, implementation and evaluation of performance improvement indicators to improve patient outcomes and the work environment.
  • Participates in problem solving with other healthcare team members related to management of clinical care area.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Emergency Department/ICU RN duties:
  • Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjust nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Uses triage process to ensure timely and appropriate care to patients. Accurately assigns triage categories.
  • Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret the results.
Additional Labor & Delivery; Postpartum and Nursery duties:
  • Able to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to AHA/AAP guidelines.
  • Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of fetal monitoring. Identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately.
  • Ability to assess presenting part and cardiac activity with ultrasound.
  • Ability to perform waived testing (point-of-care testing) per Clinical Laboratory’s according to the unit’s policy and procedures.
  • Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for infants.

  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position which entails 3, 12 hour shifts per week. Day shift is 0630-1900 and night shift is 1830-0700. Days and nights will rotate to include weekend and holidays.

Required Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current state Registered Nurse Licensure, within state of practice.
  • Current ACLS certified within one (1) year of hire.
  • MS- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) within one (1) year of hire.
  • ER—ENPC (Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) within one (1) year of hire.
  • ER—TNCC (Trauma Nurse Core Course) within one (1) year of hire.
  • OB—NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Provider) within one (1) year of hire.
  • OB—Fetal Monitoring certificate within one (1) year of hire.
  • OB—S.T.A.B.L.E. within one (1) year of hire preferred.
  • OB—One (1) or more years of recent L&D/Nursery/Post Partum experience preferred.
