Job Overview

Shums Coda Associates, Inc. is a privately held company providing professional Building and Safety Consulting Services to jurisdictions to verify conformance with Building Codes. We are seeking full‑time Building Inspectors I, II, and III for our clients in Phoenix/Tuscon, Arizona.

Building Inspectors are highly skilled in performing inspections of commercial and residential projects, enforcing code sets across a variety of building types. The work requires independence, discretion, and finesse.

Responsibilities

Building Inspector I is an entry‑level role that allows the incumbent to develop knowledge and abilities. Under immediate supervision, incumbents perform routine inspections and learn policies, methods, and techniques of inspection work. This classification may be alternatively staffed with Building Inspector II and may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher level.

Building Inspector II is the journey‑level class responsible for performing the full scope of assigned duties, including inspections, plan checks, and enforcement of codes in a broad range of building and related codes. The work requires independence and discretion in field inspections and plan checks.

Building Inspector III is the advanced journey‑level class responsible for performing the full scope of assigned duties, including plan checks and enforcement of codes across a broad range of building and related codes. The work requires independence and discretion in administrative support, field inspections, and plan examination.

Minimum Qualifications

• ICC Residential and Commercial Building Inspector Certifications
• 2+ years of experience working as an inspector in a jurisdiction
• Working knowledge of the International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, and the National Electrical Code; working knowledge of current construction methods, materials, tools and equipment
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
• Ability to detect hazards and violations and recommend corrective measures during field inspection work; ability to enforce regulations with firmness, consistency, tact and courtesy; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to remain calm, objective, and impartial under stressful conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, contractors, and the general public
• Competent use of laptop, word processing and inspection software; motor vehicle; portable radio; phone; ladder or scaffolding; tape measure; level, hand tools and reference codes
• Work is performed mostly in field settings; considerable outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities; hand‑eye coordination is necessary to operate testing instruments, tools, computers and various office equipment
• The duties of this job occasionally require the employee to climb, kneel and lift up to 50 pounds
• Must have a high school diploma; some college is highly desirable
• Must have a valid Driver License
• Must successfully complete standard background investigation
