Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an Electrical Designer to develop instrumentation and controls deliverables for EPC projects in a primarily on-site role in New York. You will prepare instrument plans, loop diagrams, wiring drawings, and control-system architecture while coordinating with multiple disciplines.

The ideal candidate has 2–7 years of electrical design experience, strong AutoCAD skills, and familiarity with field instrumentation and interfaces such as DCS/PLC/SCADA.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Drafting Technology, Electrical Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • 2–7 years of electrical design experience in industrial, power, energy, manufacturing, or EPC settings.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and industry-standard design software.
  • Experience developing electrical design deliverables from sketches, specs, and marked-up drawings.
  • Working knowledge of field instrumentation: pressure, flow, level, temperature, control valves, analytical instruments.
  • Understanding of control system interfaces including DCS, PLC, SCADA, and HMI.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Preferred: EPC project environment experience and familiarity with standards (NEC, NFPA, IEEE, NEMA).
  • Proficiency with S3D, Revit, AutoCAD Plant 3D, or MicroStation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop instrumentation and controls design deliverables for EPC and consulting projects.
  • Prepare and maintain instrument location plans, installation details, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and instrument index updates.
  • Produce control system architecture drawings, junction box layouts, cable schedules, and instrument hookups details.
  • Update P&ID markups and instrument references; review vendor documentation for project integration.
  • Coordinate instrumentation with process, piping, electrical, mechanical, and other disciplines; participate in reviews and constructability evaluations.
  • Conduct field walkdowns and site assessments to verify conditions and support execution.
  • Assist in developing project estimates, schedules, and design execution plans; mentor junior staff.

Job description

  • Develop instrumentation and controls design deliverables for EPC and consulting projects.
  • Prepare and maintain:

  • Cable schedules and routing drawings
  • Instrument hookups and tubing details
  • P&ID markups and instrument references
  • Coordinate instrumentation designs with process, piping, electrical, mechanical, civil, and structural disciplines.
  • Review vendor documentation and incorporate equipment information into project deliverables.
  • Participate in design reviews, model reviews, interdisciplinary coordination meetings, and constructability evaluations.
  • Perform field walkdowns and site assessments to verify existing conditions and support project execution.
  • Support engineering teams with drawing updates, design changes, and technical documentation.
  • Apply company standards, client specifications, and industry codes to all design work.
  • Assist in developing project estimates, schedules, and design execution plans.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior designers and drafters as needed.
Requirements
  • Associates degree in Drafting Technology, Electrical Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 2-7 years of electrical design experience supporting industrial, power, energy, manufacturing, or EPC projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and other industry-standard design software.
  • Experience developing electrical design deliverables from engineering sketches, specifications, and marked-up drawings.
  • Working knowledge of field instrumentation including:
  • Pressure transmitters
  • Flow instruments
  • Level instruments
  • Temperature instruments
  • Control valves
  • Analytical instrumentation
  • Understanding of control system interfaces including DCS, PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Preferred
  • Experience in EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) project environments.
  • Proficiency with Smart 3D (S3D), Revit, AutoCAD Plant 3D, or MicroStation.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, IEEE, NEMA, and applicable industry standards.
