Qualifications

Job description

OVERVIEW:

Under the direction of the Dental Director, the Dental Hygienist will evaluate the oral health of patients and perform oral hygiene procedures in accordance with treatment plans as prescribed the attending and on-duty Dentist. Additional duties will include completing accurate documentation through electronic medical records, preparing for patient procedures and visits, providing education to patients, and training and mentoring dental staff.

DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reviews patient medical history and educates patients on their orthodontic and general dentistry needs.
  • Evaluates overall oral health and examine oral cavity for signs of disease, including sores, recessed & bleeding gums, and oral lesions.
  • Follows through with oral hygiene procedures as specified in treatment plans prescribed by the attending Dentist. Procedures may include prophylaxis, periodontal scaling and root planning, full mouth debridement, digital x-rays, and the application of fluoride treatments.
  • Documents dental history, and chief complaint and records pertinent observations and reactions of the patient.
  • Documents procedures and ensures follow-up on results.
  • Prepares trays, pre- and post-procedure room and instrument cleanings, transitions patients from the lobby, assists with exams alongside the dentist.
  • Works effectively with the doctor, dental assistant, office manager, receptionist, and other hygienists; provides mentoring and training to dental assistants and other hygienists.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge regarding laws related to HIPAA and patient and employer confidentiality.
  • Computer skills and familiarity with electronic medical records.
  • Skilled in educating and communicating effectively to inspire patient adoption of healthy oral hygiene practices.
  • Digital x-ray experience required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene
  • Michigan Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) License
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in clinical aspects of the dental field. Prefer 1 year experience as Dental Hygienist.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (in accordance with ADA):
  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly in order to communicate information to clients and staff.
  • Must be able to have vision adequate to read documents, a computer screen, registration forms and other clinic documents, and to perform oral hygiene exams and procedures.
  • Manual dexterity; the ability to lift at least 20 pounds; and the ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
