Job summary

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking an experienced Hydro Mechanical Engineering Specialist to join our Water and Hydropower team. This remote-friendly role focuses on mechanical balance-of-plant systems, equipment upgrades at hydropower facilities, and feasibility studies for pumped storage projects across the U.S.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering required.
  • PE (Professional Engineer) license required.
  • 8+ years of hydropower experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Produce mechanical system designs including P&IDs, equipment sizing, detailed design, and system calculations.
  • Prepare equipment and design specifications and PE-stamp calculations.
  • Perform inspection, investigation, and condition assessment of existing hydropower and dam projects including review and surveillance of monitoring data.
  • Provide field support during installation, testing, and start-up.
  • Perform alternatives analysis, feasibility studies, and conceptual design evaluations.
  • Support pumped storage concept studies, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies.
  • Prepare project engineering cost estimates.
  • Assist with client presentations and preparation of client proposals.
  • Provide operations & maintenance and asset management program recommendations for mechanical systems.
  • Serve as a client manager and operate in a seller-doer environment.

Overview

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking an experienced Hydro Mechanical Engineering Specialist to join our Water and Hydropower team! This position is open to a remote work environment.

Are you ready to power the future and work with a leader in the Hydropower industry? Come join hydropower expert and longtime industry leader, Herbie Johnson! In this role, you will provide engineering consulting services to electric utilities, independent power producers, and developers across the U.S. You will lead and support projects focused on mechanical balance-of-plant systems, major mechanical equipment upgrades at existing hydropower facilities, powering non-powered dams, and feasibility studies for new pumped storage hydropower projects.

This is an opportunity to work with a multi-discipline team of engineers and technicians delivering engineering and design services to hydropower sector clients. Typical projects include life extension and system upgrades for existing hydropower facilities, Independent Engineering Assessments associated with today’s Hydro Tax Incentives, as well as the design of new facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Produce mechanical system designs including P&IDs, equipment sizing, detailed design, and system calculations.
  • Prepare equipment and design specifications.
  • Prepare, review, and PE stamp calculations, drawings, reports, etc., related to mechanical systems.
  • Independent Engineering reports associated with today’s Federal and State Hydro Tax incentives.
  • Perform equipment and contractor bid evaluations (on conformance with technical requirements).
  • Perform inspection, investigation, and condition assessment of existing hydropower and dam projects including review and surveillance of monitoring data.
  • Provide field support during installation, testing, and start-up.
  • Perform alternatives analysis, feasibility studies, and conceptual design evaluations.
  • Support pumped storage concept studies, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies.
  • Prepare project engineering cost estimates.
  • Assist with client presentations and preparation of client proposals.
  • Provide operations & maintenance and asset management program recommendations for mechanical systems.
  • Serve as a client manager and operate in a seller-doer environment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering required.
  • 8 + years of related hydropower experience required.
  • PE (Professional Engineer) license required.
  • Willingness to travel and periodically adjust schedule to meet project needs.
  • Ability to mentor and offer technical development to junior staff.
  • Previous experience in a client-facing role is preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
