Job summary

Suwannee River Water Management District seeks a Hydro Data Collection Specialist I/II to measure and record hydrometeorological data and assist with instrumentation maintenance. Field work includes data collection, site testing, and coordination with permittees for water use monitoring.

Role progresses with experience into site design, troubleshooting, and data management tasks, supporting water resource projects in Florida.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED.
• Experience in agriculture or electrical, plumbing, and/or carpentry trades.
• Experience with safely operating tools and machinery listed.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Measure and record hydrometeorological data (water levels, rainfall, radiation, wind, humidity, evaporation, Agriculture Water Use).
• Assist in installation, calibration, testing, validation, and maintenance of data collection instrumentation.
• Contact permittees to collect permissions for water use monitoring; obtain authorizations.
• Record pump run times at Agriculture irrigation systems.
• Maintain field notes and data in paper and electronic form.
• Use field and office computers to perform data collection activities.
• Assist in vertical elevation surveys at monitoring locations.
• Train for next level in the Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist series.

Job description

Help protect one of Florida’s most vital resources —water— with a career at the Suwannee River Water Management District (District).

The Hydro Data Collection Specialist performs hydrologic, meteorologic, and water use data collection, processing and quality assurance. Multiple levels have been assigned to this classification, dependent on the degree of responsibility and complexity of tasks assigned.

Job Duties Include:

Hydro Data Collection Specialist I

• Measure and record hydrometeorological data, including water levels, rainfall, net and total radiation, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, evaporation, and Agriculture Water Use.
• Assist in installation, calibration, testing, validation, and maintenance of hydrometeorological instrumentation used in hydrometeorologic data collection.
• Contact agricultural water use permittees to collect permissions for water use monitoring through power use estimation or other types of monitoring; obtain permittee authorizations.
• Measure and record pump run times at Agriculture irrigation systems.
• Maintain field notes and data collection documentation in paper and electronic form.
• Use portable and desktop computers in the field and office to perform data collection activities.
• Assist in conducting vertical elevation surveys at monitoring locations.
• Train for the next level in the Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist series.
• Considered mission critical and serves as part of the Incident Command Team.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Hydro Data Collection Specialist II also includes:

• Install, calibrate, test, validate, and maintain hydrometeorologic instrumentation used in hydrometeorologic data collection.
• Design, construct, and install monitoring sites.
• Assist in troubleshooting and repairing hydrometeorologic instrumentation used in hydrometeorologic data collection.
• Use acoustic velocity metersto measure discharge at hydrologic monitoring sites.
• Meet with landowners and appropriate staff to coordinate the collection of hydrometeorologic data and obtain signed Permissive Use Agreements.
• Use ultrasonic flow meter at Agriculture water use monitoring locations to collect flows.
• Interact with District databases that store hydrometeorologic data and supporting documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Hydro Data Collection Specialist I

• High School diploma or GED.
• Experience in agriculture or electrical, plumbing, and/or carpentry trades.
• Experience with efficiently and safely operating tools and machinery such as a post-hole digger, weed-eater, drill, or chainsaw; experience with operating and backing a truck and trailer to a specific location.
• Valid drivers’ license.

In addition to the Level I requirements, a Level II requires:

• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in hydrometeorologic or water related data collection.

Salary:

Hydro Data Collection Specialist $35,505.60 - $41,267.20 Starting salary commensurate with selected candidate's competencies and qualifications.
