Job summary

GFT in Illinois is seeking a Phase I/Preliminary Engineering Project Manager to join our roadway team, supporting IDOT, Tollway, and local agencies. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at either our Chicago or Schaumburg, IL office.

You will lead preliminary engineering transportation projects, mentor junior staff, engage with the public, and deliver cost estimates and technical reports using MicroStation, Open Roads, and GEOPAK in a collaborative setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Experience in roadway, highway, and bridge design.
• Minimum 10 years with IDOT, Tollway or local agency Phase I projects.
• Experience with MicroStation, Open Roads and GEOPAK.
• Business development and client coordination experience.

Responsibilities

• Design & Planning: manage roadway alignments, feasibility studies, conceptual designs and preliminary NEPA work.
• Team Leadership: mentor junior staff and manage work planning and production scheduling.
• Public Engagement: participate in public involvement with local agencies and stakeholders.
• Technical Deliverables: prepare cost estimates, technical reports and approvals documentation.
• Project Management: oversee budgeting, scope, scheduling, and client coordination.
• Innovation: identify challenges and implement adaptive, creative solutions.

What you'll be challenged to do:

We are seeking an experiencedandself-motivatedprofessional toleadpreliminary engineeringtransportation projects(Phase I)and contribute to the design and planning of roadway systems. The ideal candidate will bring strong technicalexpertiseand leadership skills to deliver high-quality solutions forIDOT,IllinoisTollway, andlocal agencyprojects.

In this capacity, the successful candidate willbe responsible forthe following:

• Design & Planning:Manage and deliverroadway alignments, feasibility studies, conceptual designs, and preliminary alternatives for NEPA environmental documentation.ExperiencewithEnvironmentalAssessmentsand Environmental Impacts Statements is preferred.

• Public Engagement:Activelyparticipateinpublic involvement programs and collaborate with local agencies and stakeholders.

Education | Experience:

What you will bring to our firm:

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related degree
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license
• Experience with an emphasis in roadway, highway, and bridge design
• Minimum of 10 years of experience with IDOT, Tollway, local agencyPhase I projects
• Experience/working knowledge with design software tools including MicroStation, Open Roads and GEOPAK is required
• Business Development and experience communicating and coordinating with clients

What we prefer you bring:

• Master's Degree with a Transportation Focus preferred

Salary Range: $140,000 - $200,000
Salary dependent upon experience and geographic location
