Job summary

Stanford Law School invites applications for its Empirical Research Fellowship, a full-time pre-doctoral research role starting in Summer 2027. Fellows assist faculty in policy-relevant empirical research, contributing to projects across criminal justice, public health, and more, with a strong emphasis on rigorous data analysis.

The one-year appointment may renew for a second year based on performance, with hybrid work arrangements and opportunities to audit courses and participate in seminars.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or related field (by Summer 2027).
• Experience in quantitative disciplines (economics, political science, CS, statistics, applied math).
• Training in causal inference and/or machine learning methods.
• Outstanding academic credentials and strong analytical writing skills.
• Initiative, strong time management, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Programming experience in R, Python, Stata or similar languages; prior research in empirical social sciences preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collecting, managing and structuring quantitative datasets.
• Conceptualising empirical methodologies and models.
• Statistical analysis of complex datasets and interpretation of results.
• Communicating with government officials, industry stakeholders and collaborators.
• Report writing and manuscript preparation.
