Job summary

Public Advocates seeks a collaborative Managing Attorney to co-lead the Metropolitan Equity team in advancing affordable housing, tenant protections, and transit justice. The role combines strategic leadership with direct supervision of 2-4 attorneys and policy advocates.

Reporting to the Managing Director, you will shape legal advocacy across local, state, and federal campaigns, collaborate with senior leaders on communications and fundraising, and drive organizational priorities in a hybrid

Qualifications

• At least 10 years of legal experience including high-impact litigation in state or federal courts.
• California Bar admission.
• Commitment to racial and economic justice and experience advancing social change.
• Expertise in civil rights, affordable housing, land use, tenant protections, and/or transportation.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills for legal and non-legal audiences.
• Experience supervising and developing attorneys or other legal professionals.
• Experience managing a team of lawyers and advocates.
• Ability to work with diverse colleagues and partners.
• Fundraising and securing philanthropic support experience.
• Sound judgment, integrity, high professional standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead Met Team litigation strategy and execution with pro bono co-counsel.
• Co-lead programmatic strategy and manage portfolio of advocacy projects.
• Supervise, mentor, and develop attorneys and policy advocates.
• Contribute to organizational leadership as part of Management Team.
• Collaborate on external communications and fundraising.
• Advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Promote a healthy, collaborative workplace.
