Job summary

Wattpad is seeking a Data Engineer to dive deep into data infrastructure, build and scale ETL pipelines, and empower engineers, analysts, and data scientists with robust data tools. The role focuses on delivering reliable data platforms to support data-driven decisions and feature development.

The position is a 12-month fixed-term contract to backfill a maternity leave, with a hybrid work model in downtown Toronto—3 days in the office and the rest remote.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of data engineering experience.
• Proficiency in Python and PySpark.
• Strong understanding of database fundamentals and software engineering principles.
• Understanding of Data Contracts, microservices, and API-driven datasets.
• Experience with Spark, Airflow, AWS EMR, Glue, Sagemaker or Redshift.
• Experience with batch processing and streaming systems.
• Exposure to Kafka or similar queuing technologies.
• Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
• Desire to contribute to the broader development community.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate with data scientists, analysts, engineers, and product managers to design and evolve architecture.
• Build, maintain and scale ETL pipelines for data science and analytics.
• Design and maintain data infrastructure systems (AWS DMS, HBase, EMR, Redshift, S3, Kafka, Airflow).
• Write tools, services, and platforms in Python.
• Research new technologies to solve future data infrastructure needs.
• Advocate for adoption of data engineering tools within the team.
