Job summary

Alta is seeking an Active Transportation Engineer to join our Durham, NC design team. This mid-career role focuses on sustainable transportation, bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and complete street redesigns, with work spanning from concept to detailed plans and specifications.

You will mentor staff, collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, and contribute to training and process improvements while advancing your career in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• 5–7 years of transportation engineering experience, preferably in consulting or public sector.
• ABET/EAC-accredited Civil Engineering program.
• PE license required.

Responsibilities

• Design and deliver multimodal transportation projects (complete streets, bikeway design, pedestrian improvements).
• Perform geometric layout, grading, drainage, signing and striping, and multi-disciplinary coordination.
• Assist the Project Manager as task lead or Assistant Project Manager.
• Develop Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) for bid-ready packages.
• Develop concept-level alternatives considering feasibility and impact.
• Participate in site visits to assess conditions and inform design decisions.
• Lead or support project coordination meetings with clients and internal teams.
• Support technical write-ups, memos, scope, budgets, and schedule updates.
