Job summary

The General Services Department is seeking a skilled HVAC technician to monitor, repair, and maintain large capacity centrifugal chillers and related refrigeration systems across assigned facilities. The role includes installing and testing backflow devices, and ensuring safe, efficient operation of mechanical and electrical controls.

Required qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, a 2-year apprenticeship in boiler/AC maintenance, and 3 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

  • Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possession of COP within six months from date of hire.
  • Possession of NM Journeyman JR license.
  • Possession of NM Boiler Operator Licenses BO1 and BO2 within six months.
  • Possession of EPA recovery or backflow prevention certificate within six months.

Responsibilities

  • Perform major and minor repairs to HVAC equipment and large centrifugal chillers.
  • Maintain and test boilers, water treatment in boilers and chilled water systems.
  • Preventive and corrective maintenance on bearings, pumps, motors, and fans.
  • Repair food service equipment as needed.
  • Operate and maintain digital HVAC system controls.
  • Maintain clean and safe equipment rooms and inspect detectors.
  • Maintain records of repairs and inspections; respond to public inquiries.

Job description

Monitor and maintain heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment; perform repairs, and general and preventive maintenance on large capacity centrifugal chillers, refrigeration systems, evaporative coolers, chillers, electrical/mechanical controls, controllers and general plumbing throughout assigned facility and install, repair, test and rebuild backflow devices on all boilers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essentialfunctions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Mustbe able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without areasonable accommodation.

  1. Perform major and minor repairs to heating, ventilation, air conditioning equipment and large capacity centrifugal chillers; clean filters and replace as needed.
  2. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on low and high pressure boilers; check for proper operation of safety devices; install, repair and test backflow devices; test and treat water in boilers, chilled water and condensed water systems using standard procedures.
  3. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on bearings, pumps, polyphase motors, shaft alignments and fans.
  4. May be required to repair and maintain food service equipment including ovens, grills, steam generators, deep fryers and refrigeration units.
  5. Operate and maintain digital system controls common to a wide variety HVAC systems.
  6. Perform general maintenance on equipment rooms; paint equipment as necessary to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  7. Locate, check and clean smoke detector heads to ensure reliable operation in time of emergency.
  8. Maintain records and files on equipment repairs and inspection activities.
  9. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
  2. Report and handle operating plant and facility emergencies in accordance with established procedures as necessary.
  3. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

  • A two (2) year formal apprenticeship program of specialized training in boiler and air conditioning maintenance and repair;
  • Three (3) years of boiler and air conditioning maintenance and repair experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
When assigned to General Services:
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possession of aCity Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Possession of a State of New Mexico Journeyman Refrigeration (JR) license.
  • Possession of a State of New Mexico Journeyman BO1 and BO2 Boiler Operator License within six (6) months.
  • Possession of a certificate in EPA recovery or back flow prevention within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Possession of a State of New Mexico Journeyman Plumber (JP), Journeyman Electrician (JE98), Journeyman Gas (JG), Journeyman Pipefitter (JPF) or Journeyman Sheet Metal (JSM) preferred.
Environmental:

Field environment; exposure to noise, grease, fumes and gases.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing and walking for prolonged periods; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; and operation of motorized equipment and vehicles.
