Job summary

UCLA is seeking a skilled Service Engineer to install, maintain and repair commercial and domestic refrigeration, air conditioning, and boiler systems. You will work with piping, motors, pumps, and safety systems across HVAC equipment, applying electrical and control knowledge.

The role requires strong reading of schematics, adherence to safety standards, and independent work. Willingness to overtime and weekend shifts is expected.

Qualifications

• Knowledge and experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial and domestic refrigeration systems, electrical motors, steam turbines, their respective controls, safety devices and related equipment (pumps, cooling towers).
• Working knowledge of water treatment methods and electric motors; ability to run refrigerant piping including hand soldering.
• Operation, maintenance, and repair of steam piping systems, control valves, coils, radiators, and condensate return pumps.
• Knowledge of refrigeration theory and ability to compute loads and capacities for efficient operation.
• Experience with air moving, heating, cooling, humidification, and distribution systems with electronic/pneumatic controls.
• Knowledge of psychrometrics, duct design, air balancing, and boilers' safety controls.
• Ability to read schematics and interpret technical instructions related to the trade.
• Ability to evaluate repair scope and plan tools, materials, and workforce required.
• Ability to operate trade-related hand and power tools.
• Familiarity with UBC, OSHA, ADA requirements and reporting discrepancies.
• Proficiency in basic algebra and office software for building management systems.
• Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain and repair commercial and domestic refrigeration systems and related equipment.
• Install refrigerant piping, including hand soldering, and work with two-stage/cascade systems.
• Maintain, repair, and overhaul air conditioning systems of various types and their controls.
• Operate equipment for air movement, heating, cooling, humidification, and filtering with electronic/pneumatic controls.
• Repair high/low pressure boilers and combustion and related safety systems.
• Read and interpret schematics and technical instructions for job tasks.
