Job summary

CoolSys Refrigeration and HVAC Systems is seeking a Service Tech 4 – HVAC in Birmingham, AL to perform maintenance, repair, and installation of heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning systems. You will troubleshoot complex HVAC issues, guide junior technicians, and ensure efficient operation.

Requirements include 3–5 years in construction HVAC or related field, chiller experience, and a valid driver’s license. EPA certification and strong customer service are essential.

Responsibilities

The Service Tech 4 – HVAC performs maintenance, repair, and installation of heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning systems. Responsibilities include troubleshooting complex HVAC issues, guiding junior technicians, and ensuring efficient system operation.

• Provides service to customers by repairing and overhauling equipment such as compressors, water pumps, air handlers, electrical and mechanical control devices in a safe, efficient and timely manner that exceeds customer expectations.


• Provides repair work on refrigeration, heating and ventilation equipment such as air conditioning units, evaporative condensers, ice machine equipment, water pumps, gas furnaces, compressors and electric motors.


• Provides preventative maintenance activities for customers by diagnosing equipment malfunction and any operating deficiency of the mechanical equipment to ensure quality work performance.


• Provides department support by processing job tickets and work orders to the necessary department in a timely manner.


• Provides necessary training to new or less qualified technicians as needed.


• Maintains proper truck inventory continuously and drives company vehicle in a safe manner.

Qualifications

Education / Training

• High school diploma or GED, equivalent work experience and trade or technical school classes.


• Must have passed Tech Skills level 4 with an 80% or better.


• Valid EPA certificate.

Work Experience / Skills

• 3‑5 years’ experience in construction HVAC, Refrigeration, or a related industry.


• Must have chiller experience.


• Experience in troubleshooting electrical control systems is required.


• Knowledge of hand and power tools.


• Knowledge of refrigeration equipment and piping of refrigeration equipment.


• Knowledge of computer‑controlled systems.


• Ability to read and understand refrigeration, electrical and plumbing blueprints.


• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.


• Ability to pump down all refrigeration systems and reclaim refrigerant from all types of systems.


• Good communication and presentation skills and excellent customer service.


• Ability to understand and follow all company policies and procedures and all applicable State and Federal laws.


• Ability to use typical business tools including E‑Mail, Word, Excel, etc.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Work typically occurs in convenience stores, grocery stores, food service and/or construction environments, including working at heights from ladders and/or scissor lifts.


• Mechanical rooms may contain elevated noise levels.


• Position regularly works near/with refrigeration/HVAC equipment that can expose workers to extreme cold from refrigerant and high heat from brazing operations.


• Role routinely works in outdoor conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust.


• Employees must use the correct PPE and safe work practices.


• Position is very active and requires excellent stamina to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.


• Employees are regularly required to walk and stand for long periods, hear, drive, sit, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl or climb, use hands and fingers, and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds.


• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
