Job summary

Stanford Health Care is seeking an HVAC Mechanic III to maintain and repair complex HVAC and refrigeration systems across the Stanford School of Medicine campus. This on-site role in Palo Alto requires strong technical expertise, preventive maintenance, and hands-on problem solving in a fast-paced healthcare setting.

You will install, test, and balance systems, calibrate controls, and respond to heating and cooling needs to ensure occupant comfort and safety.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; technical/HVAC certificate preferred.
• EPA 608 Universal Certification required. Driver license in-state.
• Experience with preventive maintenance and HVAC systems preferred.

As an HVAC Mechanic III, you'll play a critical role in keeping the complex heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems that support Stanford Medicine’s research and education environments operating safely, efficiently, and reliably.

In this hands-on role, you’ll help keep research, education, and university environments running safely, efficiently, and comfortably by maintaining and repairing complex HVAC and refrigeration systems across the Stanford School of Medicine campus. Working onsite in Palo Alto on a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, you’ll partner with facilities professionals to troubleshoot issues, optimize equipment performance, support installations, and respond to heating and cooling needs that directly impact building operations and occupant comfort. Success in this role comes from combining strong technical expertise with a proactive, service-oriented approach in a fast-paced healthcare setting.

The Facilities Infrastructure & Safety (FIS) business unit is vital in ensuring the safety, security, and operational integrity of Stanford Health Care facilities while also managing disaster preparedness and complex building systems to foster a secure healthcare environment. FIS is made up of multiple departments aligned in focus: Environmental Health & Safety, Facility Field Services, Protective Services, Security Services, Office of Emergency Management, Facilities Engineering - Systems, Operational Technology, Facilities Engineering- Infrastructure, Facilities Services Response Center, and Facilities Administration and Operations.

What you will do

• Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, testing, and system balancing on HVAC and refrigeration equipment
• Performed preventive maintenance work on HVAC equipment in accordance with the correct procedures and recommends changes in existing equipment and conditions for better operating efficiency.
• Installs new air conditioning units and systems, connecting the systems to required services and testing for proper operation.
• Installs, calibrates, and maintains manual, automatic pneumatic and electronic controls on all HVAC equipment.
• Obtains assistance when necessary on complicated electronics or pneumatic controls.
• Maintains tools, equipment and work area assigned.
• Prepares requisitions for supplies or materials required for given, authorized work in accordance with established procedures.
• Performs welding and brazing, and soldering on HVAC equipment in accordance with recognized and proper procedures.
• Repairs, maintains, and diagnoses problems regarding centralized air handling units for both electrical and pneumatic controls, including refrigerated air conditioning units, and walk-in boxes, cold rooms and chillers for certain areas.
• Responds to complaints for heating or cooling and makes adjustments to bring it up to the necessary comfort levels as required by the occupants.
• Tests and balances the heating, cooling, ventilating, and air conditioning to conform to the proper specifications and code requirements.
• Assists other crafts on shutdowns involving heating and cooling, and power supply for refrigerated system.

Education Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent Associate’s Degree or equivalent from a Technical/Trade School with a certificate in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, preferred.

Experience Qualifications

• Four (4) to six (6) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
• Five (5) years of health care HVAC field work, preferred

Licenses and Certifications

• CADL – California Drivers License – Valid And In State required
• Upon Hire HVACEPAU – EPA Type 608 Universal Certification required. Current employees must obtain by June 1, 2019 required Upon Hire CMM – Certified Maintenance Manager preferred

Base Pay Scale

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $57.53 - $64.80 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
