Job summary

Spring Branch Independent School District is seeking an HVAC Mechanic II to construct, modify, or repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and environmental control systems. The role works independently under general supervision and aims to optimize system effectiveness and efficiency.

Responsibilities include overhauling compressors, energy management surveys, handling work orders and estimates, maintaining records, and coordinating with principals and inspectors.

Qualifications

• Minimum ten years of related HVAC experience.
• EPA Universal license required or to be obtained within first year.
• Must hold a valid Texas Class C driver’s license.
• Preference for Stationary Building Engineer license within 12 months.
• HVAC/electrical maintenance license with City/State is a plus.

Overview

HVAC Mechanic II — Spring Branch Independent School District

Primary purpose: Construct, modify, or repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and environmental control systems. This position may serve as the technical expert in one or more HVAC areas. Work is performed independently under general supervision and involves reviewing heating and cooling requirements and recommending solutions to achieve optimal system effectiveness and efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Maintenance and repair: Overhaul large reciprocal, absorption, and centrifugal compressors; troubleshoot and repair complex chiller or control problems; analyze system requirements and recommend new systems or modifications.
• Energy management: Conduct energy management and conservation surveys to realize efficient, cost-effective HVAC energy use.
• Project execution: Receive and complete work orders; select materials, generate time and material estimates; maintain records of materials and labor; inspect and run projections; work with principals and supervisors to complete projects; respond to emergency calls during regular and after-hours.
• Safety: Operate tools and equipment following established safety procedures; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition; follow safety techniques for lifting and other duties; report unsafe conditions to supervisor.
• Other duties: Adhere to laws, regulations, and policies; complete daily logs and required documentation; act as project lead or point of contact for new construction issues; assist with energy operations; coordinate with city and village inspectors; may be on-call after hours, weekends, and holidays; perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

• High school diploma or equivalent; two years of college with HVAC courses preferred.
• Valid Class C Texas driver’s license.
• EPA Universal license to handle CFCs under 40 CFR, Part 82, subpart F or willingness to secure within the first year of hire.
• Preferred Stationary Building Engineer License or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
• HVAC license or electrical maintenance license with City of Houston or state is a plus but not required.

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Considerable knowledge of HVAC theory and maintenance practices, materials, and equipment.
• Knowledge of design and operation of centrifugal and reciprocal compressors.
• Working knowledge of electricity and of pneumatic and digital control systems.
• Effective communication with district employees and the community.
• Proficiency with HVAC programming tools, computer workstations, and diagnostic equipment.
• Ability to make independent safety judgments regarding student, staff, and public safety.

Experience

• Minimum ten (10) years of related experience required.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Environmental Factors

• Work outdoors and in mechanical rooms with exposure to sun, heat, cold, and equipment noise.

Mental Demands

• Maintain emotional control under stress; regular interaction with the public; frequent interruptions.

Physical Demands

• Continual standing, walking, pushing and pulling; ability to perform extensive physical activities (stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders), and lift up to 105 lbs; hours may be modified by supervision.
