Program Description

The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) Directorate is responsible for maintaining laboratory and administrative spaces, infrastructure, and campus landscape, as well as supporting planning, design, and construction at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research.

Job Summary

The HVAC Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems. This role ensures the reliable and efficient performance of mechanical systems while maintaining compliance with applicable codes, safety standards, and facility requirements. The position supports critical facility operations and requires strong technical expertise and a proactive approach to system maintenance and problem-solving.

Key Roles And Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain, and repair HVAC/R systems including heating systems, ventilation systems, air conditioners, refrigeration units, pumps, desiccant dehumidification systems, chillers, cooling towers, and clean steam humidification systems.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC/R infrastructure.
  • Inspect systems to identify deficiencies, potential failures, and implement corrective actions.
  • Lead HVAC/R-related maintenance and repair projects within facility operations -without supervisory authority.
  • Serves as a lead, coordinating the work of others without direct supervisory authority.
  • Develop scopes of work for system repairs, upgrades, and maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate work activities effectively with team members, contractors, and clients to ensure projects are completed efficiently and on schedule.
  • Maintain accurate service records and documentation of work performed.
  • Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal safety regulations and codes.
  • Provide off-hour support for scheduled repairs, preventive maintenance activities, and operational assistance during weather-related events as required.
  • Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation to provide support for emergency situations outside of normal business hours.
  • Contribute to the overall success of Facilities Management & Engineering (FME) by performing additional essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Responsible for leading and coordinating the delivery of complex technical and/or administrative business support or services.
  • Works independently working under limited supervision.
  • Acts as a lead, coordinating the work of others- but is not a supervisor.
  • Accountable for the on-time delivery of work.
  • May be responsible for coaching / mentoring more junior employees; but has no direct supervisory responsibility.
  • Supports the achievement of goals through personal effort in own work area and potentially outside of own work team and/or department.
  • Possesses advanced and specialized expertise, developed through a combination of job-related training and considerable on-the-job experience.
  • Selectively extracts, verifies, and compiles objective and measurable data.
  • Encounters problems that are varied and non-routine.
  • Improve existing processes, procedures, and/or tools. May require new and innovative solutions to more complex problems.
  • Anticipates patterns and links; looks beyond the immediate problem to the wider implications.
  • Exchanges standard technical or nontechnical information with colleagues and immediate superiors and/or customers.
Basic Qualifications
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years of relevant HVAC/R experience is required.
  • Possession of an EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification.
  • Knowledge of HVAC/R systems, electrical controls, and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret control schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to perform physical duties including frequently lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Duties require full range of motion, and include walking, prolonged standing, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and working in confined areas, potential exposure to particulates, vapors or noisy environment.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which could have work hazards.
  • This position is considered safety sensitive and will be subject to random drug testing per the Leidos Biomedical Research Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of a State of Maryland HVAC/R Journeyman License.
  • Experience with Schneider EcoStruxure Building Automation System (BAS).
  • Experience with Maximo Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Certification in building automation, HVAC/R controls, or related systems.
