Job summary

Duke Careers in Durham, NC, is seeking an HVAC technician to perform basic installation and service of systems in hospital and clinic facilities. The role emphasizes hands-on work with chillers, AHUs, pumps, and controls in a regulated healthcare environment.

The ideal candidate has a high school education with skilled trades training and 2 years of HVAC experience; equivalent combinations are acceptable. On-site work is required.

Qualifications

  • Education background equivalent to high school with skilled craft or trades training.
  • 2 years of experience in charging small refrigeration appliances, changing compressors, belts and valves, and adjusting temperature/humidity controls.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and/or replace HVAC systems and equipment including chillers, cooling towers, DX systems, coils, fans, AHUs, ducts and related components.
  • Complete work orders and documentation; use computer software for construction activities and compliance requirements.
  • Install HVAC systems by interpreting blueprints and manufacturer specifications.
  • Set initial settings and make final adjustments to achieve required results.
  • Assist in repair/overhaul of pumps and compressors by fitting crankshafts, bearings, pistons, and valves.
  • Modify and adjust air conditioning and refrigeration systems per procedures.
  • Assist higher level mechanics with major overhauls, alterations and repairs.
  • Change filters, clean coils/motors/belts/valves; lubricate equipment.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.

Perform basic level work in the installation of (HVAC) systems and equipment within Duke Hospital, Clinic facilities, Research facilities and outlying building in accordance with pertinent local, state, and federal codes and regulatory requirements.

Work Arrangement – On-site

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES

Experience/training in a healthcare setting preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education - Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to high school with course work in skilled craft or trades training.

Experience - Work requires 2 years of experience in charging small refrigeration appliances, changing compressors, belts and valves, and adjusting and calibrating temperature and humidity controls.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Work Performed
  • Perform basic level work to repair and/or replace HVAC systems and equipment to include, but not limited to, chillers, cooling towers, direct expansion systems, electric blast coils, immersion coil pumps, fans, starters, pneumatic and electric controls, electrostatic filters, RTU’s, AHU’s, Duct, condensers, and other various HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Complete required documentation to include, but not limited to, work order forms, order forms, use computer software as applicable to construction activities plus various employee training, payroll and compliance requirements.
  • Install HVAC systems by interpreting blueprints, manufacturer specifications, written and verbal instructions.
  • Make initial settings and final adjustments of HVAC systems and modifying existing installations to obtain required results.
  • Assist in the repair and overhaul of pumps and compressors by fitting and installing crankshafts, bearings, pistons, piston rings, valves and other mechanical parts.
  • Modify and adjust air conditioning and refrigeration systems and units following established procedures.
  • Assist higher leveled air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics with major overhauls, alterations and repairs as required.
  • Change filters, clean coils, clean motors, change v-belts and sheaves, pack pumps and valves and lubricate equipment.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $20.90 to USD $33.54.
