Job summary

Johnson Controls, Inc. in Indianapolis seeks a seasoned Systems Engineering Manager to lead a team of engineers delivering hardware, software, and network-level commissioning for projects, while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

You will drive cost-effective engineering, mentor staff, coordinate with Major Projects and Branch teams, and uphold our Zero Harm policy and customer-focused delivery.

Qualifications

  • Associate or technical degree required with 3+ years related experience or equivalent
  • Ability to lead and empower a team of engineers
  • 8+ years of HVAC industry knowledge
  • Understanding of control theory and building automation systems
  • Experience integrating low voltage building subsystems using industry protocols
  • Strong computer skills with drafting tools

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of engineers for hardware, software, and network-level commissioning on projects.
  • Develop processes to ensure cost-effective engineering and timely delivery.
  • Lead selection of controllers and end devices meeting specifications and minimizing installation costs.
  • Provide advanced technical support and act as regional expert in application engineering.
  • Maintain high engineering standards and reuse of proven designs.
  • Hire, mentor, and develop direct reports and set performance expectations.

What you will do

Supervises a team of Engineers to perform hardware engineering, software engineering and network level commissioning for Projects. Ensures work performed in compliance with state, local and federal legal requirements and operates on the job with the highest ethics.

Employ’ practices and develop processes to ensure cost-effective engineering while providing consistent delivery and customer satisfaction. Serves as an expert in application engineering. Works effectively with Major Projects and Branch teams.

How will you do it
  • Manages and schedules the workload of the Systems Engineering Team. Prioritizes work, supervises and coordinates projects to ensure progressand timely completion of the engineering deliverables. Provides timeframe estimates to project management for job cost evaluation.
  • Develops, implements, monitors and communicates the Systems Engineering team processes, strategies and standards. Provides engineering cost estimates during project development phases
  • Seeks out new and creative applications and operational techniques. Implements improvements in the processes, facilities, tools and equipment to improve quality, reliability, productivity, and to provide leading edge technology.
  • Provides advanced technical support on application or implementation issues. Serves as the Regional expert in application engineering.
  • Leads team of Systems Engineers to select controllers and end devices that will meet the specification and minimize the total cost of installation to ensure that the project cost comes in below estimate.
  • Utilizes financial, contract management and other management reports to evaluate team success.
  • Develops and maintains viable relationships with customers, consultants and architect engineers. Leverages these relationships as needed during project development and execution.
  • Maintains high level of engineering standards. Ensures maximum reuse of proven designs and programs.
  • Performs complex engineering and supports network commissioning as required on assigned projects.
  • Hires, retains, mentors, performance managers, and plans for career development of direct reports. Prepares and delivers clear performance expectations, performance reviews and development plans for direct reports.
  • Works with Major Projects and Branch teams to ensure timely delivery of engineering deliverables in order to maximize successful execution of projects.
  • Adheres to safety standards. High degree of regard to employee and subcontractor safety.
What we look for
Required
  • Associate or Technical degree, three years of related technical relevant work experience required;or equivalent work experience (with no degree) as a commercial HVAC Controls Technician, Engineer, or Installer
  • Ability to lead and empower a team of Engineers.
  • Eight plus years of demonstrated knowledge of the HVAC industry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems and other building subsystemsfrom a design, installation, and/or commissioning perspective.
  • Demonstrated experience in the integration of low voltage building sub-systems using various industry protocols. Ability to relate technical knowledge to a non-technical audience.
  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills required, particularly computer-related drafting tools.
  • Travel to job sites outside of the area as needed to support the customer needs.
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with a minimum of three years of experience.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $100,000 - $120,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This role offers a competitive Bonus plan that will consider individual, group, and corporate performance. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
