Job description

About Thea Energy

Thea Energy is leveraging recent breakthroughs in stellarator physics and engineering to create a faster and simpler approach to commercializing fusion energy. The company is reinventing the stellarator using computer-controlled arrays of planar coils thereby replacing the intricate, complex modular magnets required in all other stellarator architectures. Thea Energy is on a mission to create a limitless source of zero emission energy for a sustainable future.

Position Overview

Thea Energy is seeking a detail-oriented HTS Magnet Analyst to join its rapidly growing magnet engineering team. In this role, you will support the design, analysis, and testing of high temperature superconducting (“HTS”) magnets, foundational components of Thea Energy’s planar coil stellarator. You will work closely with senior engineers to develop and run HTS Magnet Engineering tools to simulate and predict magnet system performance. Candidates will need to be familiar with magnetostatic, quench and AC loss analysis techniques. This position will also require you to work closely with manufacturing and test teams to ensure analytical assumptions and test data are aligned with your analysis and simulation needs. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious early-career engineer or analyst to build deep expertise in HTS magnet technology within a fast-paced fusion energy company.

Key Responsibility Areas
  • Utilize your experience to develop industry state-of-the-art analytical models of HTS Magnet Systems
  • Run and maintain Multiphysics simulations (e.g. Ansys EM, Structural, COMSOL) under the direction of senior engineers
  • Collect, process, and analyze data from magnet design studies and test campaigns
  • Build and maintain data analysis tools, scripts, and dashboards using Python or similar languages
  • Support documentation of magnet specifications, test procedures, and results
  • Track program metrics and help prepare progress reports against milestones
  • Assist with organizing and maintaining design and test records, drawings, and vendor documentation
  • Support coordination with vendors and internal stakeholders on data and documentation needs
  • Identify data quality issues, trends, and anomalies and flag them to the engineering team
  • Familiarity with electro-mechanical, magnetostatic, quench and AC loss analysis
  • Opportunities to get involved in many aspects of the design, manufacturing and testing of these magnet systems
Ideal Experience & Skillsets
  • 1–3 years of experience in engineering, physics, or a data-analysis-focused role; internship or academic research experience with magnets, cryogenics, or electromagnetics a plus
  • Proficiency with Python (or similar) for data analysis and scripting
  • Familiarity with Multiphysics simulation tools (Ansys, COMSOL) or strong willingness to learn quickly
  • Working knowledge of CAD software (Solidworks, CATIA, NX) a plus
  • Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently on well-defined tasks and elevate ambiguity appropriately
  • Comfortable working to aggressive deadlines in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Genuine curiosity and desire to learn magnet engineering fundamentals
  • At least a bachelor’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, computer science, or a related field
Company Benefits
  • Salary range $85,000-$120,000
  • Comprehensive health benefits (e.g. medical/dental/vision)
  • Employee equity stock options
  • 20 days PTO
Requirements
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call.
  • Ability to work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
