Job summary

The HSE Specialist coordinates site activities required for compliance with safety programs and policies including recordkeeping, training, and inspection. This person trains, coaches and leads personnel in the use of Risk Control/Risk Reduction principles and methodologies to provide a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound workplace.

The responsibility of ensuring compliance with Company, OSHA, Local, State and Federal regulations and standards is inherent to this position.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, occupational health and safety or related field.
• CSP or CIH certification preferred.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Comply with Westlake Safety Policies and Procedures.
• Conduct site-wide training on safety policies and procedures.
• Conduct new hire/visitor safety orientation.
• Develop and maintain knowledge of company systems.
• Assist site management in incident reports and investigations.
• Develop job-specific safety training to meet site needs.
• Provide technical advising to support safety committee activities.
• Maintain safety records for the assigned plant.
• Maintain and promote KPI programs.
• Train and certify mobile equipment operators.
• Manage site SDS library.
• Maintain audit systems through HSE calendar.
• Analyze and perform root cause analysis on injuries and near misses.
• Participate in Gemba walks and address findings with site management.

JOB SUMMARY

The HSE Specialist coordinates site activities required for compliance with safety programs and policies including recordkeeping, training, and inspection. This person trains, coaches and leads personnel in the use of Risk Control/Risk Reduction principles and methodologies to provide a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound workplace. The responsibility of ensuring compliance with Company, OSHA, Local, State and Federal regulations and standards is inherent to this position. This person communicates with other company owned facilities, including corporate HSE managers. The HSE must build positive working relationships and act as a contact for leaders and employees within the assigned client group. This position must work in a team environment and have personal accountability.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following and will also be tailored area of focus (Occupational Safety), or a combination of focus areas:

• Comply with Westlake Safety Policies and Procedures.
• Conduct site wide training on Westlake safety policies and procedures.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, occupational health and safety, or a related field. CSP or CIH certified professional preferred.
• 1 - 3 years' experience in a relevant field, Manufacturing experience preferred.

• Intermediate level in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Strong organizational skills, detailed oriented, self-motivated, and ability to multi-task.
• Strong professional communication skills, both verbal and in writing.
• Knowledge of all safety and environmental programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk and climb; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and infrequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must frequently make minor decisions requiring limited judgement, general decisions in the absence of specific directions, and perform activities requiring sustained concentration.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is sometimes moderate when working in an office, however, some of the work may be required in the operating units which mandates usage of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, etc. May also result in exposure to outside elements and may require usage of stairs. Travel may be required occasionally.
