Job summary

Andritz Inc in the US is seeking a Safety Supervisor to join our field teams on hydro power plant construction sites. The role focuses on implementing the HSE Management System, ensuring compliance, and supporting site operations.

You will collaborate with the Site Manager, Supervisors, QA Specialist and Administrator, prepare weekly/monthly safety statistics, conduct inspections, and lead training and internal audits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor-level degree in Health and Safety or equivalent is required.
• Proven auditing, training and root-cause analysis experience.

Responsibilities

Summary of the role

The SSHO is mobilized to one of our construction work sites in the US. The appointee will support our teams in ensuring a safe work environment for all. They will be working as part of a site team consisting of Site Manager, Supervisors, Quality Assurance Specialist and Administrator. The size of the team and the duration of the project assignment varies depending on the project scope. The role is a mix of site office documentation of the work and, on-the floor work to ensure full compliance with the HSE Management system.

Principal Duties

• Prepares weekly and monthly statistics HSE reports;
• Implement and enforce Health & Safety Plan, Risk Assessments and and EM 385-1-1 (as applicable)
• Ensure subcontractor compliance of safety requirements.
• Use and maintain OSHA's Form 300 to log work-related injuries and post Form 300A on the site safety bulletin board
• Provides assistance in the implementation and update of the health, safety, and environmental plan;
• Provides assistance in identification of risks and definition of control measures (through safe work procedure, Job Safety Analysis);
• Carries out and records regular safety checks and safety inspections;
• Coordinates safety committee (as applicable);
• Records and investigates accidents and incidents; performs Root Cause Analysis on HSE issues;
• Establish and maintain a corrective action tracking system.
• Coordinates health, safety, and environmental aspects of site activities;
• Maintain a list of hazardous chemicals and their Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
• Provides introduction training and site specific health, safety, and environmental training;
• Coordinates required safety training on site;
• Coordinates First Aid rescue, First Aid responders and Fire Protection programs (as applicable);
• Proposes immediate correction of a HSE deficiency; checks if HSE corrections from deficiency are effective;
• Ensures OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 are maintained at site;
• Support execution of internal audits in construction sites and facilities and coordinate external audits;
• Coordinates with Workers Compensation/ Insurance Broker as required;
• Collaborates with HSE Advisor for business update on HSE Management System.

Competencies & Skills

• Experience working on Hydro powerplant construction project, USACE construction projects, with at least 5 years' experience as a Safety Supervisor with updated continued education per the EM 385-1-1.
• Must have experience with government projects
• Must have CHST or CSP certification per government requirements
• Completion of the 30-hour OSHA course - 4 years validity
• Additional 40 hours of training beyond the 30-hour
• Competent Confined space EM 385-1-1 at least 8 hours training
• Competent Fall Protection EM 385 -1-1 24 hours training - and 8 hours refresher training every 2 years
• Competent scaffold Inspector EM 385-1-1 at least 8 hours training
• OSHA course 8 hours of continued education per year for a total of 5 years.
• Additional certs in OSHA 510, 500 and BCSP or ASP desired but not mandatory.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in HSE management on a construction site or heavy industries.
• University degree in Health and Safety or equivalent
• Knowledge of Provincial/ State Construction Safety legislation.
• Experience in dealing with unionized environment
• Experience working on construction sites (Hydro power plant - an asset);
• Strong communication skills (spoken & written) at all levels of the organization.
